The association of the Moon with both oceanic and crustal tides has led to claims that the supermoon phenomenon may be associated with increased risk of events such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. However, the evidence of such a link is widely held to be unconvincing.

It'll be a SUPER moon lit night tonight. The Moon will seem especially big and bright tonight since it will reach its closest spot to Earth at the same time as it is in its full phase. The astrologers though predict natural calamities like Tsunami in the future ahead of the supermoon's appearance. Astronomers have pinpointed the time as 0334 GMT on Sunday... that's 9.04 pm in India. The NASA website says the Super moon will appear 14 percent bigger in size and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012. Reports also say the moon will be at its closest to the earth since 1912.Beyond the scientific landmark... as expected there's a huge religious significance to the day. From the religious view point, Chitra Poornima today coincides with Buddha Poornima, itself considered of huge religious significance. Quoted from NASA Perigee "Super Moon" On May 5-6 Play ScienceCast Video Join Mailing List May 2, 2012: The full Moon has a reputation for trouble. It raises high tides, it makes dogs howl, it wakes you up in the middle of the night with beams of moonlight stealing through drapes. If a moonbeam wakes you up on the night of May 5th, 2012, you might want to get out of bed and take a look. This May's full Moon is a "super Moon," as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full Moons of 2012. The scientific term for the phenomenon is "perigee moon." Full Moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. The Moon follows an elliptical path around Earth with one side ("perigee") about 50000 km closer than the other ("apogee"). Full Moons that occur on the perigee side of the Moon's orbit seem extra big and bright. Such is the ...

goodnews.ws www.studiocreativity.com blogone.biz Another "supermoon" is in the offing. The perigee full moon on May 5, 2012 will be as much as 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than other full moons of 2012. Dr. James Garvin, chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, answered questions regarding the supermoon phenomenon in a 2011 interview. Question: What is the definition of a supermoon and why is it called that? 'Supermoon' is a situation when the moon is slightly closer to Earth in its orbit than on average, and this effect is most noticeable when it occurs at the same time as a full moon. So, the moon may seem bigger although the difference in its distance from Earth is only a few percent at such times. It is called a supermoon because this is a very noticeable alignment that at first glance would seem to have an effect. The 'super' in supermoon is really just the appearance of being closer, but unless we were measuring the Earth-Moon distance by laser rangefinders (as we do to track the LRO [Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter] spacecraft in low lunar orbit and to watch the Earth-Moon distance over years), there is really no difference. The supermoon really attests to the wonderful new wealth of data NASA's LRO mission has returned for the Moon, making several key science questions about our nearest neighbor all the more important. Are there any adverse effects on Earth because of the close proximity of the moon? The effects on Earth from a supermoon are ...

The largest full moon of the year will be seen on May 5 when the moon reaches its Lunar Perigee, the period of time when it is closest to Earth. The full moon is expected to appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than an average full moon. The phenomena will occur at approximately 11:34 pm on Saturday. One minute later, the Moon will line up with the Earth and become extraordinarily bright. One result from the Super Moon will be slightly higher tides. The moon follows an elliptical path around the Earth. One side, known as the perigee is approximately 50000 km closer than the other side, called the apogee, according to NASA. Full moons that orbit on the perigee side of the Moon's orbit are brighter and bigger than any other month. The average distance between the Earth and the Moon is approximately 238000 miles. However, when it is in perigee on May 5, it is expected to be approximately 221802 miles away. Last year's super moon, which occurred on March 19, 2011 was approximately 221567 miles from the earth.
