A Swiss Airbus 319 (tail number: HB-IPT), operating flight LX1311 to Zurich, struck birds while departing St. Petersburg Pulkovo airport in Russia. The multiple bird strike caused vibrations in both engines. The crew declared and emergency and returned to Pulkovo airport for an emergency landing. Guns are deeply rooted within Swiss culture - but the gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept. The country has a population of six million, but there are estimated to be at least two million publicly-owned firearms, including about 600000 automatic rifles and 500000 pistols. This is in a very large part due to Switzerland's unique system of national defence, developed over the centuries. Instead of a standing, full-time army, the country requires every man to undergo some form of military training for a few days or weeks a year throughout most of their lives. Between the ages of 21 and 32 men serve as frontline troops. They are given an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they are required to keep at home. Once discharged, men serve in the Swiss equivalent of the US National Guard, but still have to train occasionally and are given bolt rifles. Women do not have to own firearms, but are encouraged to.

I love Raclette! This meal is traditionally eaten in fall and winter, not so much in the warmer times of the year. This is a perfect dinner party meal as it's easy to prepare, and fun for everyone to make, and so yummy! Raclette cheese can be found in any grocery or cheese store in Switzerland; if you live in North America, try a European specialty cheese store. You calculate between 200 - 250 grams of cheese per person, sliced. The raclette cheese is very flavourful and melts quickly, but it's NOT processed single slice cheese! It is real Swiss cheese, made by traditional method. What I like to eat with raclette as side dishes: mini gherkins, pickled zucchini and pumpkin, pickled baby onions, tomato salad in a balsamic dressing with chives, mini corns on the cob, bacon, pear, pineapple, and of course potatoes are a must! Typical spices used on top of raclette cheese are sweet paprika, lemon pepper, and mild curry. In stores here you can buy a special "raclette spice" mix, and I also like caraway seeds and cayenne pepper on my cheese! To drink, I personally like white wine, but some people prefer to have their raclette and fondue with tea. Raclette is also eaten in some places in France, and maybe other cheese-loving countries in Europe. :P

Our day trip on the Thunersee aboard the Bluemlisalp paddle boat with a quick stop in Interlaken. This steam paddle wheel boat was originally built in 1905 and restored in recent years to its old glory. It's really beautiful inside as well with an old-fashioned looking restaurant, bar, lots of deck seating and of course the old engine which you can watch.
