Footage from BBC's "Ray Mears Northern Wilderness: Forgotten Forest Part1of6" which was filmed in Prince Albert National Park, Saskatchewan, Boreal Forest Canada. Had to share this clip with the Huron Wild Rice "harvesting" technique, done centuries ago, and reminders on how evrything is interconnected, even down to the dynamic cycles of natural chemicals in the plants and animals! While the supply of tar sands / oil sands are abundant in Canada, the process of making crude oil from the tar sands is incredibly inefficient and contributes heavily to greenhouse gas emissions. According to one of many studies, like one done by the Rand Corporation www.rand.org crude oil created from tar sands sends 30% more greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere over its entire "life cycle" than does oil created from conventional sources. Separating the oil from sand, clay, and minerals requires massive amounts of water and heat, making it an expensive and energy-devouring process. Excavation of the tar sands makes a devastating environmental impact as it includes cutting down trees, digging enormous holes in the ground, and forming oil-slicked ponds that have killed dozens of birds. Winter was just much too long this year, especially for the two brothers Timmy and Tommy. Some of you may know that Timmy and Tommy were abandoned kittens in the back of my land, just some days old, perhaps a couple of weeks if that. Timmy was the one tending to Tommy and being concerned who I was and what would happen to them. Timmy, as it was recognized early, is the intelligent one, the investigator, the protector of his brother Tommy. There is a bunch of local friends, who love hiking through the real Siberian taiga near Yakutsk (Yakutia/Siberia) in summer. On June 6, 2006, three of them, Artem, Kallamish and Sergey went into the forest as usual. That time they decided to hike around the famous Kyjma Lake. Not a good place for BBQ, believe me.
