Feb. 24: A Rhode Island high school fired all of its teachers, personnel, principals, and administrators Wednesday in hopes of putting its students on the path to better academic performance. nbc's Mike Taibbi reports. The blue-and-white banner exclaiming "anticipation" on the front of Central Falls High School seemed like a cruel joke for an institution so troubled that its leaders decided to fire every teacher by year's end. No more than half of those instructors would be hired back under a federal option that has enraged the state's powerful teachers union, earned criticism from students and drawn praise from US Education Secretary Arne Duncan and some parents. "We all have to go," Hope Evanoff, a French teacher at the high school, told msnbc TV. The mass firings were approved by the school district's board of trustees Tuesday night after talks failed between Superintendent Frances Gallo and the local teachers union over implementing changes, including offering more after-school tutoring and a longer school day. The teachers say they want more pay for the additional work. "If it's only an hour or two, I think teachers can afford to do that," said Robert Rivera, 40, who worries about sending his 13-year-old daughter to the troubled high school next year. "The teachers are overpaid." But not every one in Central Falls was quick to blame the teaching staff for the school's poor academic performance. Only about half its students graduate, and only 7 percent of 11th-graders ...

During the 1950s, Mr. Muhammad promoted Min. Malcolm X to the post of National Spokesman, and began to syndicate his weekly newspaper column, "Mr. Muhammad Speaks," in Black newspapers across the country. Membership was increasing when, in 1955, Minister Louis Farrakhan, then Louis Walcott, an entertainer, enrolled in the Nation of Islam after hearing Mr. Muhammad deliver a speech in Chicago. Persecution of the Muslims continued. Members and mosques continued to be attacked by whites in Monroe, La., Los Angeles, Calif., and Flint, Mich., among others. Publicity in the white owned and operated media began to circulate anti-Nation of Islam propaganda on a large scale. By the early 1960s, the Readers Digest magazine described Mr. Muhammad as the most powerful Black man in America. In Washington, DC, Mr. Muhammad delivered his historic Uline Arena address and was afforded presidential treatment, receiving a personal police escort. Subsequently, television commentator Mike Wallace, in conjunction with Louis Lomax, a Black journalist, aired the documentary, "The Hate That Hate Produced," on a local New York City station. The documentary misrepresents the message of the Nation of Islam, calling it a hate teaching. James Baldwin, a famous Black author, released the book, "The Fire Next Time," based largely upon his interview with Mr. Muhammad. At the same time, white political leaders such as Senator Al Gore Sr., began to denounce the Nation of Islam and hold hearings on alleged ...

On November 4th 2008, we held a mock presidential election in my third grade classroom. Students spoke their minds about the candidates, and I facilitated making sure all sides were heard. Bay Minette Middle School Alabama Teacher Arrested for Falling Asleep in Class Alabama investigators are testing an unknown liquid and powder found on a Baldwin County teacher. Investigators say they found the substances on Bay Minette Middle School teacher Nick Pope while he was teaching.... Less than two weeks into the school year... Teacher Nick Pope is getting a lesson on the legal system. School leaders say he was helping another teacher, but then he fell asleep. Authorities came and questioned the twenty-five year old special education teacher. District leaders say this all happened in a seventh grade English class with students present. The report shows Pope was found with a prescription for Suboxone..it's used to treat addiction to Opiates. They also say an unknown powdery substance and unknown liquid substance were in his possession. Our campuses are alcohol and drug free campuses and thats are expectations for employees and students as well and when any matter like this comes up it certainly deserves a full review. School spokesperson Terry Wilhite says Pope is on paid administrative leave pending the result of this investigation. Wilhite says this is Pope's second year teaching. He also coaches football.
