Texas state health department sent 800 anonymous samples to the military to help create a national mitochondrial DNA database. The samples were sent in 2003 and 2007, according to the department's Web site. The problem is that they did it without the consent of the parents. Texas agreed to take part in the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory database project because blood spots might help identify "ethnic or ancestral origins of unidentified corpses using mitochondrial DNA," Williams said. "We believed it was an important research project that could potentially help in missing persons cases." Turtles bioaccumulate aquatic contaminants at levels that are harmful to human consumers due to their longevity (more than 80 years) and exposure to the streamfloor where contaminants are known to reside for hundreds of years. This video was used as evidence in 2007 to close commercial harvest of freshwater turtles in public waters in Texas, although Texas continues to allow harvest from private waters. The video depicts two commercial collectors in the Trinity River in downtown Dallas after capturing an estimated 400 pounds of snapping turtles and softshell turtles to be sold as food at local seafood markets and to be exported to Asia. This segment of the Trinity River is imposed with a fish consumption ban by the Texas Department of State Health Services due to harmful levels of carcinogens that were found in fish including PCBs, methyl mercury and a variety of pesticides including chlordane, a chemical that was used to combat termites which was banned by the USEPA in the 1980s due to causing cancer in humans.
In this video I share that the FDA and the Texas Department of State Health Services have notified healthcare professionals and consumers, especially pregnant or breastfeeding women, to avoid consuming a product called "Nzu," a traditional remedy for Morning Sickness.

The State of Texas today officially designated two Seton Family of Hospitals facilities -- University Medical Center Brackenridge and Dell Childrens Medical Center of Central Texas -- as Level I trauma centers. UMCB has received verification for adult trauma; Dell Childrens for pediatric trauma. Until now, Austin has been the largest city in the nation without a Level I trauma center. This is an historic event. Texas doesnt get a new Level I trauma facility very often and to get two in Austin is phenomenal, said Kathy Perkins, RN, MBA, assistant commissioner, Division of Regulatory Services, Texas Department of State Health Services, who presented the certificates to Seton leadership. To move to the higher Level I designation, both UMCB and Dell Childrens have been increasing their trauma research and education activities as well as adding certain special procedures such as microvascular surgery and digit/limb reattachment. The two medical centers have been providing many of the Level I requirements for some time, such as 24/7 availability of specialist in neurosurgery, anesthesiology, emergency medicine, radiology, internal medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery and critical care.

The wickedly addictive nature of cocaine is thought to affect long-term decision making processes more than previously believed, says a Texas A&M University researcher who has just been given a unique $1.4 million grant to study the problem. Barry Setlow, a professor in the Behavioral and Cellular Neuroscience Program in the Department of Psychology, has received a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to examine the relationship of cocaine and its effects on choices. What is learned from the laboratory rats exposed to cocaine could change the way health care experts look at treatment methods for humans who are battling addiction to the drug. From Washington - According to the American Lung Association, 60% of Americans live in areas where air pollution has the potential to cause serious negative health effects. The cities with the most particle pollution were found to be Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Bakersfield, California, while Los Angeles topped the chart for ozone concentration, potentially making it the smoggiest city in America. From Philadelphia - According to research in the journal Nature, scientists have identified gene mutations that are associated with the risk for autism. In a study of over 10000 participants, researchers found gene variants that were present in about 65% of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. It was noted that these gene variants are involved in facilitating communication between brain cells. And finally, from Texas - According to the CDC, the US has suffered its first fatality due to swine flu. The Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed that a toddler has died from the H1N1 virus. So far, there have been 314 laboratory confirmed cases and over 3300 suspected cases of swine flu reported worldwide. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
