"All or Nothing at All" is a song composed in 1939 by Arthur Altman, with lyrics by Jack Lawrence. Frank Sinatra's 1939 recording of the song became a huge hit in 1943, during the 1942-43 musicians' strike. The record peaked in the Billboard top two. In a 1944 interview, Sinatra said of the delayed success of the song, "That was the song, a few days after Harry James and myself recorded it, that gave us our walking papers out of the old Victor Hugo Cafe (a major entertainment venue of the 1930s) on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. The manager came up and waved his hands for us to stop. He said Harry's trumpet playing was too loud for the joint (it was TOO LOUD FOR ANY JOINT!!!) and my singing was just plain lousy (!!!) and fired Harry, me and the entire band on the spot. He said the two of us couldn't draw flies as an attraction, and I guess he was right - the room was as empty as a barn. It's a funny thing about that song. The recording we made of it 5 years ago is now one of the top spots among the best sellers. But it's the same old recording. It's also the song I auditioned with for Tommy Dorsey, who signed me on the strength of it. And now it's my first big record." (Wikipedia - mostly) A fabulous song, it's GREAT fun to sing, play, dance to, eat brunch to, etc, etc.... Sheet music: "The Ultimate Jazz Fakebook" copyright 1988 by Hal Leonard Corp. We don't get that much Snow in Sheffield so its quite amusing when we do. There is never enough grit around for the roads and because Sheffield is a hilly place the traffic situation is very chaotic. I walked around Hillsbough, Walkley and Upperthorpe on the way to my brothers house and took the following pictures. (note the Gritters at the end) If you are wondering why this video is linked to someone playing Jimmy Dorsey's 1932 composition Oddles of noodles - then listen to my song and you will see that its based on Jimmy's. A Twelve bar blues with an eight bar bridge (the fast part) in AABC form. I've added some chord substitution, especially in the bridge which was a bit boring harmonically. Hope you like it. Ps Next up (if I ever master it) will be Richie Cole's fabulous Harold's House of Jazz.

While Chuck and Bob Findley were on tour with the grand gentleman of European easy listening music, James Last, in the spring of 2009, they were kind enough to spend an afternoon with us to record the first "Masters of Brass" segment with two artists and what an illustrious pair of brass players they are! And they also just happen to be brothers! Chuck Findley needs no introduction. His list of recording credits reads like a who's who of pop and jazz music of the past 40 years: Babara Streisand, Steely Dan, Natalie Cole, Miles, Earth Wind & Fire, Herbie Hancock, Elton John, Quincy Jones, Madonna, Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones...and the list goes on and on. Bobby Findley was of course just a phone call away to sub for Chuck on several of the up to 12 recording sessions he had per day during the boom years. Both based in Los Angeles, they have been permanent fixtures in the music and recording scene there since the late 1960s doing steady gigs such as The Tonight Show, The Academy Awards, movie, TV and recording industry sessions and even performing as members of the second incarnation of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass. Bobby is also known for his dedication to the great brass teacher Carmine Caruso and he is the leading torchbearer carrying this tradition on into the 21st century. a masterpiece of elegance, in singing and in saying goodbye to an old friend, axel stordahl, for his last arrangement of an old sinatra standard he had arranged years ago with tommy dorsey, comes this fabulous "new" version of "i'll be seeing you" .... this was to be frank sinatra's 1961 very last record for capitol (issued in 1962) ... remember all these songs at these two 1961 session were recorded in just one take (at the most, two takes), and that each session lasted hardly more than one hour each ... isn't that class, now?

I built the first HoundRound dog exerciser for my little dog Jumbo (see other videos). I built this gigantic one (7 foot internal diameter) on commission for some Siberian Huskies. For motivating the dog, it can be switched between a kibble dispenser and a peanut butter conveyor belt. The treat dispensers are powered by the motion of the dog on the exercise wheel.

A comparison vid of Lana Turner (1921-1995) and Ava Gardner (1922-1990), two MGM beauties who were lifelong friends from when they met. Both were teenagers plucked from obscurity and put to work at the most powerful studio in Hollywood. They both costarred with Clark Gable, Van Heflin and Robert Taylor. They also were romantically involved with some of the same men, but never at the same time - Frank Sinatra, Artie Shaw (they would both marry him), Howard Hughes and Johnny Stompanato. In 1946, they each played deadly femme fatales in two of the most celebrated film noirs - Lana in "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and Ava in "The Killers". Lana's daughter summed up her mother's friendship with Ava like this: "Mother and Ava Gardner were a dynamite pair. Of all her friends, I think they were the closest in temperment and outlook on life. They shared many of the same tastes and even fell for many of the same men, yet they never let it affect their friendship. Both loved all things Latin. Bullfights thrilled them. They could rumba, samba, or dance the flamenco from sundown to sunrise. Even their final years were similar. Both were world-class beauties who ended up no longer wanting romantic attachments, were somewhat reclusive, and hooked on the telephone. They were telephone friends until Ava passed away in 1990." It's too bad they never made a film together! Interestingly enough, Ava made a film with the love of Lana's life, Tyrone Power, while Lana made a film with Ava's ...

Tatum appeared on Steve Allen's Tonight Show in the early 1950s, and on other television shows from this era. Unfortunately, all of the kinescopes of the Allen shows, which were stored in a warehouse along with other now defunct shows, were thrown into a local rubbish dump to make room for new studios. However, the soundtracks were recorded off-air by Tatum enthusiasts at ...
