The Southern Belle was a named passenger train service operated by the Kansas City Southern RailRoad (KCS) from the 1940s through the 1960s, running between Kansas City, Missouri and New Orleans, Louisiana. To promote the new train, KCS held a beauty contest to find "Miss Southern Belle," a young woman whose image would be used in advertising materials systemwide. This movie shows the train in 1940 as it collects the "Southern Belle's", as well as parts of the contest, then showing us the luxury features of the train. The New Orleans Museum of Art and The Historic New Orleans Collection are proud to present their seventh joint exhibition, Women Artists in Louisiana, 1965-2010. The show resumes where last spring's exhibition, Women Artists in Louisiana, 1825-1965: A Place of Their Own, left off. The new exhibition continues to focus on the creative legacy of the state's women artists, starting with the dawn of postmodernism and bringing viewers to the present day. On view are forty-four paintings, sculpture, photographs, and decorative arts by forty artists. The works include portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, non-objectives, and abstracts. Among the featured artists are Martha Ambrose, Jacqueline Bishop, Lynda Benglis, Jane Nulty Bowman, Dawn Dedeaux, Lin Emery, Mignon Faget, Suzanne Joslyn Fosberg, Joanne Greenberg, Angela Gregory, Shearly Grode, Ronna Harris, Gail Hood, Ann Hornback, Jacqueline Humphries, Ida Kohlmeyer, Carol Leake, Shirley RabŽ Masinter, Chyrl Savoy, Eugenie "Ersy" Schwartz, Ann Strub, Patricia Whitty, Margaret Witherspoon, Mildred Wohl, and Jesselyn Zurik. Photographers include Debbie Fleming Caffery, Sandra Russell Clark, Tina Freeman, and Josephine Sacabo. This exhibition features some artists whose reputations are well established locally and nationally, and others who are still emerging. The contributions of these artists of the latter half of the century, understandably, were made possible by earlier women artists.
This is a collection of races that Michael Johnson competed in during the 1996 outdoor season. The first two races are the US Olympic Trial finals for the 200m and 400m. Johnson narrowly missing the world record in the quarter and breaks Mennea's world record in the 200m that stood for 17 years. The next races were great foreshadowing for the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in Atlanta. In these races, Johnson, Ato Boldon, Roger Black, and the forever young Frankie Fredericks put down some incredible times. Helping to serve as some motivation I am sure, Fredericks actually bested the new record holder in the 200m in a photofinish! Hopefully you enjoy the historic footage!

Amy Goodman visits Google's Mountain View office to present her book "Breaking the Sound Barrier". This event took place on April 30, 2010, as part of the Authors@Google series. Amy Goodman breaks through the corporate medias lies, sound-bites, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects, the experts who, in Goodmans words, know so little about so much, explain the world to us, and get it so wrong," this accessible, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear. From community organizers in New Orleans, to the courageous American soldiers who've said "No" to Washington's wars, to the victims of torture and police violence, we are given the extraordinary opportunity to hear ordinary people standing up and speaking out. As Willie Nelson says, "There is no one who should be more on the mainstream media, every day reminding us and giving us a glimpse of the power of one." Written with all of the fierce intelligence and passion for truth that millions have come to expect from Amy Goodmans reportage, Breaking the Sound Barrier is, in Arianna Huffington's words, "crusading journalism at its best." and, here's an example: www.youtube.com

Washington, DC is the capital of the United States of America. It is the home of the President of the United States and Congress. Often called "DC", the District of Columbia, many tourists visit the city each year. They come to visit the parks, Capitol Hill, The Mall, and the many memorials and museums. Washington, DC is shaped like a rectangle and covers 62 square miles. DC is bordered by the states of Virginia and Maryland. The Potomac River flows along its western and southern borders. With a population of just over half a million people, the District of Columbia is the only city-state in the United States. Let's start our tour of DC at Capitol Hill, or "the Hill". In November 1800, the first joint session of the Senate and the House of Representatives was held here. More than forty presidents have called the White House home. The White House has 132 rooms, along with executive offices. It is also a museum of American antiques. The Ellipse is the large lawn south of the White House. Important activities are held here for special holidays. The rest of the year, people walk along the tree-lined paths. Near the White House is the Reflecting Pool. It is 1/3 of a mile long, 180 feet wide and three feet deep. The Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial are at opposite ends of the Pool. At the west end of the Reflecting Pool is the Lincoln Memorial. As the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln served during the American Civil War. He is famous for the Gettysburg Address. The ...

Looking back to what seems like a simpler time - now incredibly 10 years in our past already. Highlighting the celebrations that took place December 31, 1999 leading up to the arrival of the new millennium. Coverage shows midnight arriving in the Central and Mountain Time Zones in Mexico City, Chicago, New Orleans, Boise, Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Calgary. Then the countdowns move to the West Coast in Seattle, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and San Francisco. There was such optimism everywhere that night. Some things since then may have disappointed us, but as another decade arrives now, maybe we need some of that again... Have hope - the 21st century is still young. *** All material is owned by original producers & talent; I claim no rights for profit -- just an admiration for all of the hard work that went into the programming they shared with the world on that historic day. ***
Tour 13 DesCours PODCAST for "Night Garden" by Virginia San Fratello and Ronald Rael, part of DesCours 2009 Installation series sponsored by the New Orleans Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Concept: The Night Garden installation will take place in a traditional New Orleans courtyard with historic ceramic masonry construction. The Spanish style brick courtyards of New Orleans were built after the fires of the 1780s and 90s and typically included a water fountain that could be used to exterminate future fires. The choice of ceramic masonry for construction meant that the courtyards would be safe havens and would not burn as they had in the past. Borrowing from this rich history, The Night Garden is a new, vertical landscape built of glowing ceramic vessels. The vessels are built to hold water and blooming flowers, including evening primrose, moonflowers and brassavola. The flowers were chosen due to their fragrant nature and night blooming characteristic. The installation references the traditional construction material, the intentional placement of water, and the historic relevance of fire, all while highlighting the exotic plant life of New Orleans. Bio: Rael San Fratello Architects works at the intersection of architecture, art, culture, and environment and has won numerous awards for their work. VIRGINIA SAN FRATELLO is a licensed, practicing architect with over 10 years of professional and academic experience. She earned her Master of Architecture ...

The Museum also highlights the role of Louis Joseph Dufilho, Jr. whose work symbolizes the beginning of a system of certifying the professional competence of pharmacists, and recognizing the vital significance of that competence for the public health.

Banksy is an English graffiti artist. He is believed to be a native of Yate, South Gloucestershire and to have been born in 1974, but there is substantial public uncertainty about his identity. His artworks are often satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture and ethics. His pictures sell for 6 figures and one of his works sold at auction to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie for 2 million dollars. Banksy has visited New Orleans and created more than 12 murals that depict Abraham Lincoln as a homeless man, a marching band wearing gas masks, and a boy flying a refrigerator kite. The New York Times reports that in a statement released by Banksy, the murals were created in response to Fred Radtke, an anti-graffiti campaigner also known as the Gray Ghost, who uses gray paint to cover up graffiti. This is a collection of the remaining murals that we were able to find, unfortunately the others have been painted over. Some of the property owners have put plexiglass over the artwork to protect them from the Gray Ghost. Wesley Mears
