THE NAACP MOURNS THE PASSING OF CIVIL RIGHTS GIANT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CEO EMERITUS DR. BENJAMIN LAWSON HOOKS. Hooks was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1925. He graduated from Howard University in 1944 and then joined the army shortly thereafter where he earned the rank of staff sergeant. After completing his army duty, Dr. Hooks enrolled in DePaul University College of Law after no Tennessee law school would admit him. Upon receiving his law degree, Hooks returned to Memphis to practice law and he joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1965 he became Tennessees first black criminal court judge and in 1972 Richard Nixon appointed him to be one of the five commissioners of the FCC. On November 6, 1976, the NAACP Board of Directors elected Hooks as Executive Director where he served until 1992. Dr. Hooks spoke at the NAACPs Centennial Convention in New York last July and left the NAACP with words to live by: Lets fight on until justice runs down like waters and righteousness as a mighty stream. Lets fight on until there is no down-sizing, until there is no glass ceiling. Lets fight on until God shall gather the four winds of heaven; until the angel shall plant one foot on the sea and the other on dry land and declare that the time that has been will be no more. Fight on, until the lion shall lie down with the lamb. Fight on, until justice, righteousness, hopes equality and opportunity is the birthright of all Americans.

Facebook.com - Become a Fan! Twitter.com - Follow Us! Some of our favorite ladies hit the recent NAACP Image Awards red carpet - and they didn't disappoint! Your style recap is next! Hello fashionistas. Joslyn Davis here for ClevverTV with the latest news from the red carpet. Many of Hollywood's most promising young stars hit the NAACP Image awards just days ago and style was dazzling. So here's the recap. First up is the always-beautiful Ashley Argota-who you all know and love from True Jackson, VP and from her appearances here on ClevverTV. For the big night, Ashley changed things up with a short dress with fun, full skirt. She played up the the asymmetrical dress with a side-swept hairdo and dark nail polish. A very cute, youthful, and of course fashionable look. Someone who we noticed looked really similar to Miss Ashley was Vampire Diaries actress Katarina Graham. She also looked amazing in a short black dress, and we really loved the lace top of the edgy look and the sleek hair style. But stealing the show on the red carpet was the job of two other starlets that night. It was a very close tie between Keke Palmer and Selena Gomez. Selena chose an exquisite white gown. She channeled her inner-Grecian-goddess in this look, complete with the loose, curly up-do, and lovely drop earrings. But we're thinking that the red carpet really belonged to Keke Palmer who won an Image Award that night. The bright yellow dress was a fantastic color choice, and also very appropriate ...

Obama speaks at NAACP. "We have to say to our children, `Yes, if you're African-American, the odds of growing up amid crime and gangs are higher. Yes, if you live in a poor neighborhood, you will face challenges that someone in a wealthy suburb does not,'" Obama said, returning to his tough-love message familiar from his two-year presidential campaign. "But that's not a reason to get bad grades, that's not a reason to cut class, that's not a reason to give up on your education and drop out of school," he said. "No one has written your destiny for you. Your destiny is in your hands and don't you forget that." Obama expanded his message of equal rights beyond the black communities. He said many Americans still face discrimination. Racism, he said, is felt "by African-American women paid less for doing the same work as colleagues of a different color and gender. By Latinos made to feel unwelcome in their own country. By Muslim Americans viewed with suspicion for simply kneeling down to pray. By our gay brothers and sisters, still taunted, still attacked, still denied their rights." Obama also pressed for NAACP members to encourage their young people to find new role models beyond sports or music. "I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers," Obama said. "I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court justice. I want them aspiring to be president of the United States." To bolster his argument that it's within their ...
