The shocking conclusion of "The Dirty Dozen"....and the credits. As I'm sure you all can figure out now, this was definitely a suicide mission. I'm not gonna say who dies, but it's obvious that the makers of this film wanted to be realistic about the team member's chances of survival. Another thing I like about old films like this...the don't waste much time on credits at the end. You can't complete a film nowadays and be done with the credits in less than 5 minutes any more.
Part 15 of "The Dirty Dozen." The Major and what's left of his men figure out a way to complete their mission...and it's gonna require a lot of explosives and combustibles! Meanwhile, the Germans are sending reinforcements into the area to save the officers from the assault on the Chatteau. Will our intrepid heroes complete their mission and escape back to Allied lines? Stay tuned!
PART 10 Part 10 of The Dirty Dozen. Now our intrepid dozen have to literally fight for their livesthis time they are tasked with infiltrating Col. Breeders command post. But how on earth will they be able to do this after having been seen by Col. Breeder himself just days earlier when he arrived at their compound? Well, these are the same troops you saw earlier in the film. They are cleaned up, lean and mean, and they will do whatever it takes to prove themselves. They have become EXACTLY what Major Reisman trained them to door theyll die trying (and some of them just might). The Dirty Dozen not only spawned several (rather lame) sequels, but the movie itself would help transform war movies as a genre for many years after its release. Audiences would no longer accept some film with an all-star cast just going through the motions (the failure of A Bridge Too Far is proof of this). From now on, every war film, if it was going to have any appeal, had to display some kind of anti-authoritarian angle. Such examples include: Kellys Heroes M.*A*S*H Catch-22 Cross of Iron Force 10 From Navarone Hell in the Pacific Soldier of Orange The Tin Drum Patton Some may argue with me on that last pic, but no one can argue that the great appeal of George C. Scotts portrayal of Gen. Patton is that he in unrelenting in his desire to win at all costs, even if it means disobeying orders from SHAEF (which he clearly did in Sicily, and always wanted to do as he tore through Western Europe). While ...
Part 8 of "The Dirty Dozen." Now we get to see the guys flex their social graces with some of the local womenfolk...a parting gift from the Major in celebration of the completion of their training. But not so fast! Col. Breeder decides to give the unit a revelry they won't soon forget. The success of the original movie spawned many spin-offs. Several made-for-TV movies were produced in the mid- to late-1980s capitalizing on it's popularity. Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine reprised their roles for "The Dirty Dozen: The Next Mission" in 1985, leading a group of military convicts in a mission to kill a German general who was plotting to assassinate Adolf Hitler. In "The Dirty Dozen: The Deadly Mission" (1987) Telly Savalas, who had played the role of the psychotic Maggott in the original movie, assumed the different role of Major Wright, an officer who leads a group of military convicts to extract a group of German scientists who are being forced to make a deadly nerve gas. Ernest Borgnine again reprised his role of General Worden. In "The Dirty Dozen: The Fatal Mission" (1988), we see Telly Savalas's Wright character again and a group of renegade soldiers attempting to prevent a group of extreme German generals from starting a Fourth Reich, with Erik Estrada co-starring and Ernest Borgnine again playing the role of General Worden. The year 1988 also witnessed a short-lived television series, with no major stars, that lasted only six episodes...oddly enough, this one TV show ...
Party 7 of "The Dirty Dozen." After their surprise reception, Major Reisman has to put one of his soldiers in front of the crowd, posing as a general incognito. After much HI-larity, Col. Breed figures out that something is amiss...so he sends a couple of his knuckle-draggin' cronies to check out some of the members of the group. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Major Reisman decides to plan some kind of "graduation" party for his recruits. This movie is notable for several things, but I think one aspect that gets overlooked is just how many actual World War 2 veterans were actors in this film. Lee Marvin was a former Marine sniper scout. Ernest Borgnine served in the Navy. Robert Webber was also a former Marine. Telly Savalas and Charles Bronson served in the Army. Clint Walker was in the Merchant Marine. In fact, Lee Marvin frequently served as an impromptu military advisor on many of the war films he worked on over the years. He even criticized Aldrich for the way he wanted to shoot the knife scene with Pvt. Posey, but Aldrich retorted that the who premise of the film was preposterous, so why bother shooting for such accuracy now?
Part 6 of The Dirty Dozen. After many attempts to find some kind of unit cohesion, the 12 recruits finally make an improbable stand about their living conditions, and finally take back some form of control over their situationan event that explains why the movie has its name. Also, the men have to go an receive a crash-course training program on how to parachute. When the unit arrives at the airbase, they have an expected welcoming committee waiting for them. Most folks nowadays probably wont even catch the significance of Jim Browns role in this film, since its fairly commonplace to see major athletes play important acting roles in films. But at the time this movie was made, Jim Brown was the top leading rusher in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns. At the ripe age of 29, he decided to take on this acting role, and basically had to leave the NFL because the owner of the Browns refused to allow him to act AND be a signed player on his team. So after 8 seasons in the pros, and now being forced to make a choice, Jim Brown decided to take a chance and pursue an acting career instead. Many years later, Art Modell (the Browns owner) said in Spike Lees documentary Jim Brown: All American that his intransigence had been a mistake, and if he had to do it all over again, he would not have forced Jim Brown to make such a choice. In fact, looking at it now, such an ultimatum sounds freaking ridiculous to mebut it was a different time back then, and I guess the owners pretty much ran ...
Part 5 of The Dirty Dozen. The men begin learning (or maybe re-learning) the skills theyll need for their covert mission. The Major begins to push some of the mens buttons to see what their breaking point is. Also, we get to see the mens psych evaluations...and the results are none too good. Best line in this scene: Army Psych: You've got one religious maniac, one malignant dwarf, two near idiots and the rest I don't even want to think about. Major Reisman: "Well, I can't think of a better way to fight a war." While some critics may think Lee Marvin's character wasn't very deep or dynamic, I think it's safe to say that this role was more academy award-worthy than the role he played that garnered his win in "Cat Ballou." Granted, his role was HI-larious as the drunk gunslinger with an incredible lucky-streak. But I think his hard-boiled role in this film is actually much better suited to his talents, and far better deserving of an Oscar. By the end of this film, one is thoroughly convinced that only someone like Lee Marvin's character could have "reached" these unmanageable soldiers.
Part 4 of The Dirty Dozen. Now our recruits head off to their secluded training facilitywhich also has to serve as their acting prison while they prepare for their mission. Will all of the men keep their word and not attempt to escape? Some of you are probably wondering if this story has any basis in reality. And it should be very obvious by this point that the premise of this film, however noble it may be, is completely fictional in nature. However, I dont think that detracts from this film in the least. In fact, my opinion is that the best war films are in fact completely fictional. Sure, they may have some element of history to them, such as this one does regarding the impending D-Day invasion. But sometimes a fictional story will have better resonance and meaning as film than a purely documentary-style film, just because of the fact that it isnt forced to fit inside a square box and conform to specific historical accuracies. I sometimes feel thats the reason why some films like A Bridge Too Far or The Longest Day dont hold up as well overtime. Oh sure, dont get me wrong, those are great films too, and they have a lot of combat-actionbut they spend so much time dealing with the facts that you tend to lose sight of the individual characters, and why they matter to the audience. Anyway, thats just my opinion.
Part 3 of The Dirty Dozen. Major Reisman continues his interviews of the inmates. The terms are very simple: if anyone attempts to escape, then EVERYONE goes back to the brig for immediate execution of their sentences. But, someone in the group already has ideas on bustin out. As an interesting tidbit, the great John Wayne was originally going to be cast as Major Reisman, but John Wayne had issues with some of the Majors person behaviors and habits, and didnt want to play a part of someone who was themselves just as morally ambiguous as the men he was attempting to train. Likewise, Jack Palance was going to be cast as the psychopathic Private Maggot (Telly Savalas), but Palance also took issue with the characters overt racism. However, Robert Aldrich and the screenwriters deserve credit for standing their ground with their casting decisions. By this point, Palance was getting long in the tooth, and John Wayne was clearly way too old to play this part. Giving the role to Lee Marvin was a brilliant move, and it would have been a cop-out to make Private Maggot any more sympathetic of a characterhe was a psychopath, for Christs sake, why would you want to soften him?
Part 2 of "The Dirty Dozen." Major Reisman gets to meet his dozen recruits, and immediately gets challenged by one of the inmates...who gets to experience the Major's wrath. And we get to meet the condemn prisoners, and find out more about why they are in the hole. When this film came out in 1967, nobody expected it to be the #1 box-office money maker of that year. The director Robert Aldrich, better known then for his Betty Davis melodramas "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and "Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, fought hard to get the rights for the book this movie was based on. He expected to direct a really good, punchy war film, but even he (nor the studio execs.) anticipate the resonance this film had with younger audiences. One has to remember at this time that "The Dirty Dozen" came out after a slew of big-budget war films with bloated casts. But the anti-authoritarian themes and plot was an easy sell, and it grossed a whopping $18 million during it's release in the US at that time.
