Thaipusam is a festival to celebrate the event when Lord Murugan received the Vel (Holy Spear) from His Mother, Goddess Parvathi. The Vel, a symbol of light and wisdom was used by Lord Murugan to rid the world of the three asuras (demonic beings) and bring peace and balance back to the Heavens and Earth. Thus the Vel is the protecting and purifying force of Lord Murugan and Thaipusam is a celebration of these forces. Thaipusam is a time to beseech Lord Murugans blessing to lessen the burden of bad karmas from wrong doings and to make lives more positive. Thus the Thaipusam is a festival that is marked by acts of penance such as carrying the kavadi. Carrying kavadi is a practice of penance or prayaschittam. The tradition of carrying kavadi was started by a great devotee of Lord Muruga, Idumban, who worshipped Lord Murugan at the Palani Hills temple in Tamilnadu. He created the first kavadi. It was a simple structure that consisted of a straight horizontal branch of a tree with two small pots of milk tied at either end and decorated by a wooden arch, flowers and peacocks tail feathers. Idumban also pierced a small vel shaped skewer across his cheeks. Thannermalai Temple Thaipusam The Nattukkottai Chettiar Temple also known as Arulmigu Thandayuthapani Temple is one of the more famous Hindu temples located in Penang, Malaysia. Dedicated to Lord Subramaniam, also known as Lord Murugan, it is better known as the Thaneermalai Temple. Located on Waterfall Road (Jalan Air Terjun), the Shaivite temple is the central focus of the annual Thaipusam festival in Penang. It was founded around 1854, after the chettiar community in Penang Street bought the piece of land to build the chettiar quarters, or chettinar. Bhogar Shrine The Bhogar Shrine is in the southwestern corridor of the hill temple. Siddhar Bhogar created the icon (the amalgam of nine minerals) and did daily services. He lived long ago, perhaps 3000 BC. A medical prodigy as he was, he could prepare the amalgam on nine medicinal minerals in proper proportion. In this shrine, pujas are offered to Navadurga, Bhuvaneswari and Maragatha Lingam that were worshipped by Bhogar. It is said that there is a subterranean tunnel linking the shrine with the sanctum sanctorum through which Bhogar is said to go to the main idol and perform daily pujas as he is said to be only in nirvikalpa samadhi.
