Girls lacrosse -- Tara Benninger -- Thomas Worthington During the season, her coach didn't really like to talk about it much. But the fact was this: The Cardinals were a whole lot different team when four-year starter Tara Benninger was on the field than when she was not. Case in point -- the Thomas at Dublin Jerome game. When Benninger had to leave the game with a deep bruise, the Cards were comfortably ahead. In the end, Thomas had to scratch out a win in overtime. "Without her voice and leadership, we struggled," said Thomas coach Ally McCarthy. Benninger, a returning first-team All-American and first-team All-Ohioan, also made her presence felt in the box score with more than 70 goals in 2009 as the Cardinals went 17-5, won the North Regional Tournament (Benninger scored five times in the final), and advanced to a state semifinal. Benninger scored three goals in the final Thomas game, a loss to Upper Arlington, "She was our playmaker," McCarthy said. Boys lacrosse -- Kyle Carey -- Thomas Worthington In the hotbed of boys lacrosse known as Central Ohio, it takes a special player to stand out when he's not in the offensive end. Thomas Worthington defenseman Kyle Carey's coach put it simply in describing his All-American: "Dominant," said Cardinals boss Steve Kraus. "In every game he played, he was the best player on the field." Other Central Ohio coaches would use those same phrases, sometimes in awe of the talent on display. A three-time defensive MVP for Thomas, Carey not only did a shutdown job in his zone, but also took faceoffs and often keyed the Cards' attack. "He started fast breaks, and he was also an offensive threat," Kraus said. "He is just an outstanding player and person." Westerville South upends Northland in the Central District DI semifinal game Saturday evening. Northland's Devon Moore scored 24-points to lead all scorers, but it wasn't enough. Westerville South converted 11-of-11 from the charity stripe in the final few minutes to seal the victory.
