Amputations and heart disease are at record levels in Tonga's hospitals. In a health system with no facilities to deal with kidney failure or cancer - 80 per cent of surgeries are linked to lifestyle related diseases, notably, obesity. Six out of every 10 Tongans are obese. On average, Tongans' eat four times the amount of food recommended by the country's health department. Tonga is now looking to ban or tax poor quality imported foods. Legislation may not teach restraint but keeping fatty foods off the menu is a step towards slimming down Tonga's spiraling health costs. Al Jazeera's Drew Ambrose reports from Nukualofa, Tonga.

Kainga Kotoa 'o Tonga (Tonga around the Globe) was written for the 2010 "Carols by the Sea" Concert held in Nuku'alofa, The Kingdom of Tonga on Saturday 11th December 2010. The piece was written to portray, through spoken word, recorded sound, live music, dancing and audio-visual projections, the essence of Tonga in the 21st Century - a modern South Pacific monarchy, with a population who, no matter where they are in the world, will always remain fiercely proud of Tonga, and keep their home country close in the their hearts and minds. The piece is based around the poem by the poet and nimatapu (Family line of Royal Undertakers) Ma'um'atãpule titled "Speak to the Hearts of all Tongan's". (Translation below) The vocal harmonies, signifying the great Christian choral tradition in Tonga are infused with western, contemporary harmonies, to signify the multicultural nature of Tonga's people. The trumpet section, borrowing from the Tongan National Anthem, and with the performers live on stage, is a celebration of that which makes Tonga what it is today, the monarchy. The final rhythmic section is a celebration of the old and the new, represented though dance. The live performance featured a visual "battle" between contemporary dance and traditional Tongan dance, before the two groups of dancers come together as one. This signifies the vibrant, creative and ever-present Youth culture in Tonga, the future of Tonga in the 21st Century. Speak to the hearts of all Tongans I long for ...

Volo 1/3rd of the Tongan Outlawz. A in depth view of how it all started. One of the many hip hop acts coming out of California's Monterey Peninsula, the Tongan Outlawz, (also known as the TOL) are grinding their way to the top with members Sunrize, Volo, & Lil' Ni. The unsigned hip-hop trio have a unique blend where each member bring their own style to the table. With Sunrize's smooth delivery, Lil' Ni's high energy rap style, & Volo's Lyrical flow, their desire to make it work has made TOL a great addition to the local central coast hip-hop scene. All three of the members carry Tongan ancestery and like many pacific islanders in the US, they come from a family history of struggle and hardship, which of course, are expressed in the their music. With the anticipation of a self titled debut album in the works, the TOL has music ranging from party & club tracks, feel good island vibes, and smooth/ hard sounds that made westcoast hip-hop popular; they can do it all. From the days of being tape recording kid rappers to the present day of being serious minded MC's, the Tongan Outlawz prepare their music, not only for the Central Coast and their Polynesian people, but for the world.
