What a great trip this was. If you've never been to Alaska--GO!!! Everyone should go at least once. Most on the trip did the Inside Passage and got off at Seward, took the bus ride to Anchorage and flew home. We also did 5 days in the Interior of Alaska. If you go, do both, and if possible book through Holland America. It is then that you will know what an Alaska trip is all about. Sorry no audio. When I find something appropriate for such an experience, believe me, I will add it. Enjoy.
This is a must-see presentation about the Tongass National Forest in southeast Alaska. It is by far the largest old growth forest in the United States, but it is being clear-cut, even with the change in President. All we have to do is remove the taxpayer subsidies, and the logging will stop.

Nestled between 3000-foot high granite walls, the narrow, twisting slice of ocean called Tracy Arm Fjord weaves through the Tongass National Forest for roughly 35 miles. The shoreline is spotted with waterfalls created by melting snowcaps and trees sprouting at odd angles from rocky outcroppings. You will have ample time to admire the landscape and perhaps catch sight of a few native animals as you cruise through this port. The Sawyer Glaciers at the end of Tracy Arm may not be the most famous glaciers in Alaska, but many visitors find them to be the most dramatic. Framed by mountains on either side, the glaciers are often bathed in a light mist that amplifies the blue hue of the ice.

Ketchikan is the fourth largest city in AK and is located on Revillagigedo Island on the Tongass Narrows, surrounded by the Tongass National Forest. For many cruises to Alaska Ketchikan is the first Alaska port of call and is full of adventure and beauty. Over 10 days I had more adventures than I ever imagined possible. Special thanks to Sara and Brian & the Earl Hines crew for putting me up and helping make these lovely memories. (be sure to check out part 1) www.alaskatours.com

Just got back from our trip to Alaska and wanted to put together a video of the photos I took up there. I took more than 600 photos, so it was really challenging to narrow them down. If you haven't been to Alaska, I highly encourage you to make the trip up there at some point in your life. The views are absolutely breathtaking. It's the most beautiful land I've ever seen. Our trip began in Fairbanks, then we continued on to Denali National Park, Talkeetna, Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage, Whittier, College Fjord, Glacier Bay, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, then our journey came to an end in Vancouver. Denali National Park was my favorite part of Alaska. I also really enjoyed the train ride we took through the mountains. It was there we encountered some of the most breathtaking views. I also really enjoyed the 4x4 adventure through the Tongass National Forest. And the river at Talkeetna was also stunning with its incredible views of Denali (Mt. mckinley -- Alaskans call it "Denali.") The song in the video is one of my originals, "Alive Today." Please pardon the clicks and pops. Final Cut Pro did something funky with the audio when I exported the video. "Alive Today" is available on itunes. Use this link: phobos.apple.com
Join me on a journey through the Tongass National Forest, which is threatened by clear-cutting. President Barrack Obama's Administration has authorized the clear-cutting of hundreds of acres of old growth forest, with the Forest Service planning 676000 acres of clearcut logging of ancient forest. This are supports tens of millions of salmon, and a tourism and fishing industry with more than 30 times more jobs than the logging industry.
The Tongass National Forest is a stunning landscape of old-growth rainforest, mountains, islands, glaciers, and fjords. Ancient stands of the largest old-growth trees make up only about 3 percent of the Tongass, yet these are also the trees most often targeted for logging. If we act today, we have an unprecedented opportunity to conserve the remaining ecological pieces of the world's last great temperate rainforest. Visit www.audubonalaska.org to learn more about how you can help save this rare global treasure.

In a 6-3 decision, the US Supreme Court has given Lower Slate Lake in the Tongass National Forest of Alaska, a death sentence. The ruling overturns a 9th District Court decision that revoked the permit issued by the Army Corps of Engineers that allowed Coeur Alaska's Kensington gold mine to dump its mine tailings directly into the lake, killing all aquatic life in it. The Clean Water Act clearly states that you can't dump mine waste into a water body, but the Corp of Engineers cleverly changed the name "waste" to "fill" and permitted the action, essentially killing the lake. I find this decision appalling and in defiance of logic. Where is the justice in a decision like this. Are the 370 well paying jobs that this mining operation is creating worth the environmental destruction that it creates? I don't think so. (more)(

Congressman Young offers his support for an amendment by Ranking Member Hastings to the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2009. This amendment would give hiring preference to young people who come from communities that receive funding through the Secure Rural Schools and Communities Program. These are communities that have been decimated by the federal governments anti-timber policies. Also in this video, Congressman Young corrects Congressman Baca as to the meaning and origination of government regulations.

We live in Ketchikan, Alaska, where it rains 25 feet a year! All that water helps trees and other plants grow like crazy. That's why the Tongass National Forest-the largest temperate rain forest in the world-grows so well here. Some days when it's raining, and we can't get out and enjoy nature, we go to the next best thing, the South East Alaska Discovery Center.

Recorded February 18, 2007. Misty Fjords National Monument covers 2294343 acres of Tongass National Forest in the Panhandle of southeast Alaska. The area is called "The Yosemite of the North" for its similar geology. Light-colored granite, about 50 to 70 million years old has been sculpted by glaciers that gouged deep U-shaped troughs throughout the monument. The monument certainly lived up to its name on the day of my visit, as it was definitely misty. During the video of my cruise of the area we also see some wildlife in the form of a wolf and a killer whale. From: timvp.com
