On April 9, 2009, Mena, Arkansas, was very nearly wiped off the map by a devastating F3 tornado that took three lives, injured 22, seriously damaged countless homes, destroyed businesses and seriously rocked the economic base of the community. The face of Mena has changed as many of its long-time residents have been forced to move. Into this depressing story come the students of Mena High School. With their EAST (Environmental and Spatial Technology) communtiy service projects they have helped to rebuild the middle school and have raised money to help homeowners rebuild their homes. See their story here. They discuss some of their other projects as well. Mena High School students joined hundreds of other elementary, middle and high school students on March 3 and 4, 2010, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, at the annual convention of EAST classes from eight states.

I went up in a plane on Tuesday April 14th to survey the damage from a plane for the tv station I work for (KHBS-KHOG 40/29 TV Photographer). The ride was pretty bumpy and even with having my camera attached to the window with a stickypod it still was pretty shaky. You can still see the damage especially the area near the masonic lodge (I slowed down this part of the video). I will try and get together some of the many hours of ground video I have shot over the last 7 days and post on here within the next week.

Some months ago I rode around my little town of Mena, Arkansas on my recumbent bike to show off our pretty little town. I had not posted this video due to poor quality on the narrative sound levels, but feel it is appropriate at this time to go ahead and post this video. A few months after shooting this video, our town was rocked by an F3 Tornado. Mena lost around 600 homes and businesses and for a town of less than 6000 population, that will web quite and impact to the community. Like most small towns in America, the community will pull together to make it through these tough times. My condolences to those who lost family and friends in the Tornado, and to those who lost their homes. Looking forward to brighter days. I will be posting some "post tornado" videos very soon. Check out my Blog at: thisismyshadygrove.blogspot.com

Residents of Mena Arkansas contines today by picking up the pieces of their lives, after a EF-3 Tornado tares through their little town thrusday (4/09/2009) Killing 3.
Damage to a neighborhood in Mena, Arkansas. As many as three EF3 tornadoes came through Southern Arkansas on Thursday April 9th 2009. Here is some of the worst damage. Three people from the city of Mena died because of injuries caused by this tornado. This video was taken the next morning Friday April 10th 2009.
here is a clip shot from my vehicle as I was driving to my house ... elsewhere, damage was much greater: stone buildings knocked down and the county courthouse has no windows and looks like a 5000 pounder bomb went off a couple of blocks away. Many. many poor folks are homeless now and it will take a long time just to clean up the damage to rebuild.

The After. Of a tornado hit in Mena Arkansas. A Beautiful Small Town.
April/09/09 a lot of devastation Even a Mobile house was turn upside down. Incredible
This loop shows the core that went over Rich Mountain die out some as a new rotation is becoming clear on radar with both hook echo and doppler signature. This core was on the southern end of a line of storms and went directly over Mena. I am pretty sure it was the tornado that evening that hit town.
