Complete video at: fora.tv Raj Patel, author of The Value of Nothing, assesses the effectiveness of cap-and-trade legislation. He argues that the trading aspect of the system benefits "big polluters and even bigger banks" at the expense of consumers, but that placing a legislative cap on pollution has been a success. ----- If economics is about choices, who gets to make them? Activist and academic Raj Patel says that prices often mislead us, and he reveals the "hidden costs" of goods. To demonstrate his argument that the free market and corporations distort price and value, Patel suggests that the true price of a hamburger would be $200 if we factor in the hidden environment and health costs. Patel offers a controversial critique of our present political system and argues that to understand our current economic crisis, we need to rethink our very meaning of democracy by re-balancing society and limiting markets. - Commonwealth Club of California Raj Patel holds a doctorate in Sociology from Cornell University and has worked at the World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations. He is a writer and activist concerned with land reform politics, development studies, and food sovereignty. He authored Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System.

This video, produced by EPA enforcement attorneys speaking on their own personal behalf, explains why cap-and-trade, while applicable for acid rain, will not work for climate change. It explains why a fee-and-dividend approach is more appropriate and will benefit the environment and the economy. Economists call this the "double dividend." The video is divided into three sections. 1. The Big Lie which is that cap-and-trade will work for climate change. The reality is that cap-and-trade works great for acid rain, but would not work for climate change. 2. The Big Rip-Off which discusses how carbon offsets make things even worse because they can be easily gamed and because all the money will flow to the cheapest offsets. 3. The real solution which discusses fee-and-rebate which provides a double benefit, helping both the environment and economy.
The United States and Europe subsidise their cotton producers heavily (US subsidies alone came to USD 3.9 billion in 2001 and 2002), creating an imbalance in the international markets. This protectionism, which benefits 30000 privileged farmers in the United States and Europe, threatens the livelihood of 10 million people in western and central Africa whose only resource is growing and exporting cotton. Four African countries have joined forces to launch an initiative at the heart of the WTO, attempting to put a stop to these hidden barriers to trade and the free exchange of products originating in developing countries. For the first time, emerging nations are using diplomatic means and the structures of the WTO to change the rules of international trade. In this era of globalisation, small countries are demanding that the rules of globalisation apply to everyone, and not just when the interests of developed countries are at stake.
This video is the first in a 3 part series that goes through an example of cap and trade and discusses 3 different policy options on the grounds of efficiency and fairness. Japan is recognized as economic leader and technology nowadays. However in the course of economic growth after World War II, Japan had earned reputation of heavily polluted country. Japan suffered from all kinds of pollution because of the heavy industrialization at the expense of environment and people's health; Minamata disease, Yokkaichi asthma, Itai Itai disease are just a few well known examples. This program looks back how Japan has suffered from the pollution, then concur the problem without damaging the economic growth. It analyzes what cost more for companies, pursuing profit without care for the environment, or investing in the environmental measure at the very first stage.

Swedens entire population has equal access to health care services. The Swedish health care system is government-funded and heavily decentralized. The health care system in Sweden is financed primarily through taxes levied by county councils and municipalities. Costs for health and medical care amount to approximately 9 percent of Swedens gross domestic product (GDP), a figure that has remained fairly stable since the early 1980s.
Verde creates hydrogen rich synthetic fuels, primarily from a virtual 100% extraction of hydrogen from water. This is mixed in 4-5 to 1 part with carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide of low temperature biomass gasification to create a version of syngas that can be easily converted with different pressures and catalysts (GTL) to create very hydrogen-rich fuels and oils: ex: propane (20 psi), Fisher Tropsch oil (160 psi) and Methanol (260 psi). Verde's systems process any organic (animal or plant), plastic or coal waste products (in 1-1 to 1-2 parts waste to hydrogen from water), producing on average, 560 gallons of liquid products (not water) per ton of waste processed. Hydrogen is the key to both our energy and environmental problems at its' root. It is the literally the real energy component that burns hotter and cleaner. Increase the hydrogen concentration to over 30%, and the moisture created as a combustion reaction (h2 + 02 = h20) 'kicks' out most of the gas pollution (emissions). The concentration of hydrogen is so high in all of Verde's Synthetic fuels and oils lines, that it can now be used to help the rest of the petroleum industry, For more info - see www.verdereformation.com
Cap and Trade is a scheme to take your money. "...It's pretty bad when our Congresscritters are passing bills that they haven't even read, things that they know are greatly altering our economic future. But you know what's worse? The ignorance of the voting public. After all, we elected these fools. They know you don't expect them to read it. They want you to believe as Al Gore, the self-appointed arbiter has said that this global warming debate is over. Finished. Kaput. They want you to think that you are being the good little environmental soldier by staying apathetic or supporting the cause which they say will save Mother Earth from evil humanity. They know you don't understand Science. After all, you were educated in their schools. Because of your ignorance, it is necessary to dispose of a few myths that are widely carried. First of all, Carbon Dioxide isn't the same as it's much more toxic cousin, Carbon Monoxide. You would be surprised how many people don't know the difference and the look that they give you when you try to explain. Also, Carbon Dioxide is neither a component of acid rain or smog. It is not found in tanker oil spills or those oil spills which occur naturally. As a matter of fact, It is not a component of any type of pollution. It has never given anyone cancer or heart disease. It has never caused anyone to commit suicide. It doesn't care whether or not you recycle. It is mostly a benign, common substance. Like water, only a virtual drowning in the ...

Three years ago, I stood on the floor of the California Senate and watched a similar celebration over a similar bill, AB 32. And I have spend the last three years watching as that law has dangerously deepened Californias recession. It uses a different mechanism than Cap and Trade, but the objective is the same: to force a dramatic reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Up until that bill took effect, Californias unemployment numbers tracked very closely with the national unemployment rate. But then in January of 2007, Californias unemployment rate began a steady upward divergence from the national jobless figures. Today, Californias unemployment rate is more than two points above the national rate, and at its highest point since 1941.

In the first nine months of 2006, the carbon market grew to nearly US$22 billion, more than doubling in value over the almost US$11 billion recorded in 2005. Can this booming market mitigate the impact of the greenhouse effect? We speak to politicians and top World Bank officials, who think it an imperfect but important mechanism for an imperfect world, and to commentators such as Kevin Smith of the NGO Carbon Trade Watch, who see carbon trading as equivalent to the selling of indulgences by corrupt mediaeval priests. The system of penalties and incentives known as the carbon market is built on the successful sulphur-trading market that helped the USA deal with acid rain: countries are allocated permits for carbon emissions, and those that emit less than their allotted amount can sell their excess permits to countries that produce more than they should. Sounds complicated? It is. The World Bank is charged with ensuring that developing nations benefit. We go to Brazil, India, China and South Africa to see how the so-called Clean Development Mechanism is working at the grassroots.
