It began as Sea Shepherd supporter Gary Thomason arrived. He told me earlier in the day that on this occasion he would not parade Sea Shepherd banners because he didn't want to draw attention to himself. Banner or not, there was no stopping the pro-whaling activists in drawing their attention to him. They recognised Thomason and pointed him out to police as soon as he stepped out of a taxi. A group of at least 10 officers surrounded him. They tried to whisk him away but it was too late. Tempers flared and scuffles between protestors and police broke out along the pavement, spilling out onto the busy road. When police removed Mr Thomason from the area, the pro-whaling protestors turned on the 3 News cameraman chasing him across a busy highway ripping the equipment out of his hands and kicking the camera battery down the street. The ferocity with which the protestors attacked police and a 3 News cameraman would have landed them in a paddy wagon and charged with assault had they been in New Zealand. Here in Tokyo protestors appear to be given a long leash by police who tried to move the protestors back into an area sectioned off for their demonstration.
