Watching an Unsuccessful Triple Crown Bid, and Finding a PassionNew York Times (blog)It was 2008, and I had refused to watch Big Brown's Triple Crown attempt from my couch at home. He was a horse with no name, a yearling in a sales ring at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., about 90 minutes from Churchill Downs, home of the most famous race in the universe, the Kentucky Derby. An exercise rider working for a training center in Florida liked what he saw, bought the colt for the low price of $11000 with the idea of preparing him for the races, then selling him as a 2-year-old for a nifty profit. If he had only known. That unnamed baby became I'll Have Another, an extraordinary thoroughbred who with a win in Saturday's Belmont Stakes would become the 12th Triple Crown champion, and first in 34 years. "I never saw this coming," says Dennis O'Neill, the brother of I'll Have Another's trainer, Doug, who picked out the horse at the Ocala Breeders' Sale for 2-year-olds in training in April 2011, and bought him for a modest $35000 for owner J. Paul Reddam. "Nowhere in our wildest dreams did we think we had a Derby winner," says Doug O'Neill. "I'm a very lucky guy to have such an amazing horse."
SUBSCRIBE to Next Media Animation: www.youtube.com UPDATE: An injury to his left front tendon has forced I'll Have Another to scratch from Saturday's Belmont Stakes, ending hopes to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978. I'll Have Another will also retire from racing after earning more than $2 million in prize money. I'll Have Another will run in the Belmont Stakes on Saturday. Trainer Doug O'Neill and jockey Mario Gutierrez hope the chestnut colt will be the first Triple Crown winner since 1978. Facebook: www.facebook.com Webpage: www.nma.tv Twitter @nmatv: twitter.com Tumblr: nmatv.tumblr.com I'll Have Another will start the clear favorite, having already won Grade 1 races the Santa Anita Derby, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Plenty of horses have won the first two legs of the Triple Crown. The last was Big Brown in 2008. But no horse has won the elusive Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978. Others to do so include Seattle Slew in 1977 and Secretariat in 1973. Although the I'll Have Another is a short-priced favorite at 4-5, its chances are longer than odds might suggest. Other entrants such as Dullahan at 5-1 odds are fresher, having skipped the Preakness. In addition, I'll Have Another has drawn Gate 11, far from the rail. Gate 11 has produced just two winners from that post since 1905. Meanwhile, Gate 1 has produced 23 winners, while Gate 3 and Gate 5 have produced 14 winners a piece. Dullahan has drawn Gate 5. A win for I'll Have Another would also ...
