TOKYO—The strongest earthquake to hit Japan in at least 300 years rocked the country on Friday afternoon, triggering a 10-meter tsunami that violently engulfed cars and other objects in its path in northern Japan, forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate their homes and setting off tsunami warnings for 53 countries around the world. Police raised the death toll to 60, with 39 missing while dozens were injured in a wide range of areas including Miyagi Prefecture and central Tokyo, according to Kyodo News and the Associated Press. The quake, one of the five biggest in history with a magnitude of 8.9, caused mass panic around Tokyo, where workers evacuated their buildings and power was cut off in 4.1 million households in Tokyo and neighboring prefectures. The natural disaster could derail the country's nascent economic recovery and increase Japan's already massive public debt, which is 200% of gross domestic product. The government issued an official emergency at one of the country's nuclear plants after the quake shut down its reactors and caused problems with the cooling system. Officials said there are currently no reports of radiation leakage. A large tsunami is sweeping through north-eastern Japan, following an earthquake thought to have been 8.9 on the Richter Scale. The first wave has also reached Russia's Kuril islands to the north, reportedly around a metre high. 11-thousand people are being evacuated from the area. In northern Japan, water is surging inland in Sed-ay, some 350km north of Tokyo. There's considerable damage and many casualties - although numbers can't be confirmed because communications are badly-affected. Several people are missing. The lower floors of buildings on Honshu island are being flooded and cars overturned. A bridge has also collapsed. Tokyo's Norita International Airport has also closed. The quake's epicenter was located 130 kilometres off Japan's Pacific coast. A tsunami warning's now in place across the entire Pacific region. Looters broke into some damaged shops in Christchurch, police said. The powerful quake hit 19 miles west of Christchurch, the South Island's largest city, according to the state geological agency GNS Science. Die Südinsel haben wir inzwischen verlassen, und nach zwei Tagen im sensatioenellen Wellington (inklusive Rugby-Spiel, Bericht folgt später) sind wir jetzt in der Mitte der Nordinsel angekommen. Den gesamten unteren Teil haben wir mit einer entschlossenen Autofahrt auf der SH1 heute übersprungen. Im Auto heute morgen der erste Schock: Radio an, und wir hören, dass für Neuseeland eine Tsunami-Warnung erlassen wurde. Strandbesuche verboten, Häfen werden geräumt. Dann hören wir auch, dass es wegen des Erdbebens in Chile ist. Wir sind erstmal froh, dass wir Wellington und die Küste verlassen, und ins Landesinnere fahren. Auch auf der Autobahn begrüssen uns gleich Warnschilder: "Tsunami Alert - Listen to radio". Mann mann mann, da kann man ganz schön Angst kriegen - hier in Neuseeland ist allem Anschein nach ja nix passiert, zum Glück. @1.05+ SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia issued a tsunami alert on Saturday for its eastern coastline following a massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake on the other side of the Pacific Ocean in Chile, government meteorologists said. The Bureau of Meteorology issued marine warnings covering an area stretching from just north of Sydney to just north of Brisbane, a region which includes several resort areas, including the Gold Coast. "Sea level observations have confirmed a tsunami has been generated," the bureau said on its website. The bureau warned of possible dangerous waves, strong ocean currents and "dangerous, localised flooding of the immediate foreshore" from 8.45 am Sunday morning local time (2145 GMT Saturday). It warned residents not to visit the foreshore to watch the tsunami. Boat owners were advised to return to land and secure their vessels if in shallow waters or remain offshore until further notice if in deeper waters. Similar warnings were also issued for the offshore islands of Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Islands.....
