Southern Taiwan was cleaning up Tuesday as many schools reopened, some with military help, in the wake of deadly Typhoon Fanapi. The storm had also slammed southeastern China. (21 September 2010)
On to Taiwan, where Typhoon Fanapi drenched the island over the weekend. The system is now dumping heavy rain in southern China. Typhoon Fanapi lashed Taiwan over the weekend, causing injuries and widespread flooding. More than 11 thousand people in mountainous areas and other dangerous territories were evacuated. Since Saturday, about eight inches of rain fell in most areas but about 40 inches of rain fell in Pingtung County. Floods in Kaohsiung inundated many buildings. Eastern and southern Taiwan, along with Kinmen Island, will suffer the ravages of the typhoon until Monday evening. Now its China's turn as strong winds and torrential rain started about 7am local time. China raised the storm alert to the second highest level, and 186 thousand people along the coast were evacuated, while 55 thousand boats were docked at harbor. The 11th and strongest typhoon to hit China this year brought winds reaching 85 miles per hour while about ten inches of rain were predicted to hit some areas. Typhoons regularly hit China, Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan in the second half of the year, gathering strength from the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or South China Sea before weakening over land.

The intention - to offer comfort to those whose lives were devastated by the typhoon that swept through parts of Taiwan in August. But not everyone welcomes the Dalai Lama's visit. Some have branded it a political stunt. On arrival he remained firm about the sincerity of the trip. [Dalai Lama, Tibetan Spiritual Leader]: "My side: No political agenda, nothing to discuss with the leaders of this country." Many lost friends and family in the disaster as well as their homes [Mr. Yen, Villager]: "Look, there are all these people. He is coming here to comfort us; I'm happy about that." [Hsu Hsin-Yao, Villager]: "It's great that he's come; it's good for our hearts." Earlier in Khaosiung City, protestors gathered at the hotel where the Dalai Lama was staying [Protest organizer] "To donate us money or help us rebuild our houses would be more meaningful. What is he doing in this hotel? He should be staying in our village in the disaster area. Has he seen it or not? How can he pray for us?"
Typhoon Morakot left its mark in southern Taiwan. In the mountainous region, clean-up continues on Tuesday the 18th, 11 days after the storm hit the island. Relief supplies continue to pour in and hundreds of local residents are evacuated. But some residents have refused to leave. A villager did not mind walking for miles to get relief supplies. [Mr. Wan, Resident]: "It takes me half a day to go back and forth, but I need to buy children's stuff, home cleaning items, like detergents for dishes, we have nothing now." Another resident did not want to leave her home even though it was destroyed. [Miss Hsieh, Home Destroyed]: "I think I can still live in my house. Although after the typhoon destroyed our beautiful homes, there are lots of places we need extra effort to rebuild. But I still want to live here." A group of residents gathered to pray for the deceased. The official death toll of the catastrophe is 126. But the Taiwanese president said last week that more than 500 people could have been killed. The typhoon caused agricultural losses which cost millions. More than 250 road segments and thousands of homes were damaged and could take years to rebuild. More than 60 countries have donated relief supplies and monetary aid. Typhoon Morakot hit Taiwan on August 8, bringing torrential rain that triggered floods and mudslides which swamped villages and mountainsides in the south of the island.
And now to Taiwan for the latest update on Typhoon Morakot. More people are being rescued, though more than 500 are feared dead. More survivors are brought to safety in Taiwan following the destruction from Typhoon Morakot. Morakot hit Taiwan a week ago, killing up to 500 people, according to the latest estimation by the island's President Ma Ying-jeou. Ma, accused of reacting too slowly to the disaster, visited a shelter to reassure the victims that everything possible was being done. [Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwanese President]: "We won't start school until all concerns are cleared. We don't want any problems with school buildings half way into a semester." The typhoon was the island's worst storm since 1959. More than 35000 people have been rescued from disaster areas in the south. But efforts are being hampered as several thousand metres of road are blocked by mudslides leaving many villages only accessible by air. Torrential rains and landslides have also knocked out dozens of bridges. Repairs are expected to take up to three years and will cost more than 3.5 billion dollars.

Inconsolable. This woman explains how her mother and father are among four relatives buried under a mudslide. They're believed to be among as many as 600 residents of a village trapped in their homes following these powerful torrential rains brought on by a typhoon in southern Taiwan. Hsiao Lin, a village with some 1000 residents, saw its roads and bridges washed away by the force of Typhoon Morakot. As rescue teams try to reach those who are trapped, their desperate relatives gather to offer each other support. [Unidentified, Relative of Missing Person]: "All my relatives are in there, more than ten of them. It has been three days since we lost contact." [Unidentified, Relative of Missing Person]: "The mountain collapsed. We lived on a lower level and the landslide was on a higher ground. All my relatives were buried." Though no one knows exactly how many people are trapped under the mud, the army says some single-story houses are definitely submerged, which means many residents might still be buried. So far more than 50 people have been confirmed dead from the tropical storms which have raged across Asia, hitting Taiwan, the Philippines, China and Japan.
At least 107 people were killed and 61 others remained missing in the floods and landslides triggered by Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan, the National Fire Agency says.
Hundreds of people are still missing in Taiwan, four days after Typhoon Morakat hit the island. It's feared they've been buried by landslides and drowned in floods triggered by the storm. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao sent this exclusive report from the devastated Hsiao Lin Village, the worst-hit area in the country.
Rescue teams in Taiwan have reached isolated villages on the fourth day of a massive relief effort to help the victims of Typhoon Morakot. Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports from the village of Hsiao Lin, completely flattened by mudslides, in the island's south.
And now to Taiwan where sadly a rescue helicopter crashed while rescuing survivors of Typhoon Morakot. This is the visible wreckage of a rescue helicopter that's crashed in southern Taiwan. Three people are feared dead after the accident that may have been caused in the wake of Typhoon Morakot. The chopper was on its way to pick up more survivors from the disaster zone when it went down. Witnesses described the final moments: [Unidentified Crash Witness]: "I turned around and saw the helicopter above with white smoke, the front part must have fallen already." The helicopters are crucial to reach remote places like Kaohsiung county. Up to six hundred people from a single village in the region are still missing after a landslide. Touring the disaster zone, Taiwan's Prime Minister Liu Chao-Shiuan urged people to keep calm. [Liu Chao-Shiuan, Taiwanese Premier]: "Rainfall is still increasing every day. We have to adjust our attitudes towards disaster prevention measures." So far the loss to agriculture alone is estimated at 128 million US dollars. The final bill is certain to be a great deal higher.
Unbelievable and sobering footage of the devastation that has hit Taiwan as a result of a typhoon.
A massive rescue effort is underway in Southern Taiwan as emergency teams try to locate thousands of people still unaccounted for in the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot. Buildings and roads have been washed away by floods and mudslides, as Al Jazeera's Steve Chao reports.
At least two typhons and a tropical storm are hitting several Asian countries hard. China, Japan and Taiwan have seen at least 33 deaths and officials expect the death toll to continue to rise. (Aug. 10)
TAIPEI, Taiwan A mudslide touched off by a deadly typhoon buried a remote mountain village, leaving at least 400 people unaccounted for Monday, and military rescue helicopters unable to land because of the slippery ground dropped food to desperate survivors. Typhoon Morakot slammed Taiwan over the weekend with as much as 80 inches (two meters) of rain, inflicting the worst flooding the island has seen in at least a half-century. The storm submerged large swaths of farmland in chocolate-brown muck and swamped city streets before crossing the 112-mile-wide Taiwan Strait and hitting China, where it forced the evacuation of nearly 1 million people. A disaster appeared to be unfolding around the isolated southern village of Shiao Lin, which was hit by a mudslide Sunday at about 6 am local time — while many people were still asleep — and was cut off by land from the outside world. Speaking to The Associated Press, a Taiwanese police official who identified himself only by his surname, Wang, said 400 people were unaccounted for in the village. Wang said 100 people had been rescued or otherwise avoided the brunt of the disaster. One of the rescued villagers, an unidentified middle-aged man, told police that his family of 10 had been wiped out. "They're gone," he said, according to a local photographer who overheard the exchange. "All gone." Another rescued villager, Lin Chien-chung, told the United Evening News that he believes as many as 600 people were buried in the mudslide ...

Typhoon Morakot passed through Taiwan, and battered China's east coast over the weekend. At least four million people have been affected and the Taiwanese Government is undertaking rescue efforts to save its people from the disaster. Typhoon Morakot continued to batter China's east coast on Monday, affecting at least four million people, state media reports said. Morakot landed on mainland China on Sunday, killing a child and destroying many homes. Half a million people from coastal Fujian Province were moved to safer parts ahead of the typhoon's arrival. Rescue and recovery work is still under way, as electricity in many parts of the coastal Zhejiang Province was cut off. Many flights across the region have been cancelled and at least one cargo ship was beached by the winds and waves. In Taiwan, Morakot continued to cause damage in the south, with swollen rivers washing over roads, bridges and villages. The typhoon, the worst to hit Taiwan this year, has killed 14 people, left 51 missing and injured 32, according to officials. Thousands are being evacuated as major highways are damaged, and more than 300 villages were subject to landslide warnings. Military helicopters were dispatched to offer search and rescue for trapped local residents in mountainous areas. [Rescued Woman]: I was afraid we wouldn't see each other again. We are safe now. A Typhoon is battersing Southern Taiwan, bringing with it the worst flooding in decades. At least one person has died so far and scores of people are missing. A huge rescue operation is underway in southern Taiwan. Typhoon Morakot has battered this part of the country damaging roads and houses, forcing thousands to flee. The military have been brought in to take people to dry land. But people are still trapped in doors. [Local Resident]: "My mother is trapped inside but I cannot get over there. There is no way to rescue." As flood waters rose overnight people took to whatever heights they could. It's the worst flooding to hit the country in 50 years, officials said the tropical storm has killed at least one person and scores are missing. The death toll is expected to rise as the flood waters recede. The Central Weather Bureau said wind speeds reached up to 137 kph. China is also bracing itself for the typhoon. Torrential rain lashed the country's eastern coast. China's Xinhua news agency reported more than 90000 people have been moved to safe ground. Typhoons regularly sweep across China and Taiwan, gathering strength from the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea.
