U2 Tears Up Tiny Boston Stage Published by MTV News on Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 12:01 am. By Benjamin Wagner newsroom.mtv.com It was the worst-kept secret in Boston, and for good reason. The Worlds Biggest Band was tearing up one of Beantowns most-intimate venues, and everyone wanted a piece. As a kid from Iowa whos life was changed by The Joshua Tree, I was no exception. All around the 900-seat Somerville Theater, thousands of chattering fans queued behind barricades for a fleeting glimpse of the band. One woman plead to Sway through tears as he endeavored to deliver a stand-up. Traffic stalled. Police lights flared. It was chaos. Inside, the tiny, one-time vaudeville theater was ready to blow. Sway only added to the frenzy, briefly introducing the band then ushering them onto the stage as only he could with his extra-long, extra-emphatic vowels. Give it up for Uuuuuuuuuuuuu Twoooooooo! And with that, The Edge attacked the already-familiar fuzz-guitar intro of Get On Your Boots, and it was on. Bono marched in place like some 21st century general calling his troops to muster. This is where it all began, he said as The Edges feedback momentarily faded. Right here in Boston. Just as quickly, though, The Edge signaled go-time with the thickly-distorted intro to Magnificent. The audience of radio-contest winners and uber-fans cheered wildly as Bono sang, I was born to sing for you, the Moroccan-origins of the track especially evident in his turn of a vowel. With one leg on ...

www.wickedlocal.com Somerville rocks with U2 By Auditi Guha Wed Mar 11, 2009, 04:30 PM EDT Somerville - Davis Square moved in Mysterious Ways all of Wednesday as U2 came to play at the Somerville Theatre. A crowd of screaming pushed up against barricades as Somerville cops urged them to calm down to avoid trampling, while packs of media crews crowded the sidewalks to capture the Irish rock bands visit to Somerville. U2 was scheduled to perform a short set at the city theater as part of three secret US concerts to promote its new album. Despite the excitement, tickets were next to impossible obtain, unless you won a local radio contest. If you dont have a ticket, you cant get in, said Police Chief Anthony Holloway. We will strictly enforce this. That did not stop fans. David L. Castine of Medford camped out in front of the Somerville Theater from 8:30 am in hopes of scoring one. Anticipation built around 4 pm as the crowds waited for the band to come in the back entrance for a sound check. Eager fans climbed nearby trees and fences to try to catch a glimpse of the famous rockers. Music blogger for Hamptons.com in NY, Mariah Quinn, came down to catch the rock group on Meacham Road. It seems like a really cool event for Somerville, she said North Dublins Brenda Treherne was there, carrying her dog Fonzy, a hairless Chinese crested dog. She lives in Somerville and said, Its great to see my hometown friends here, hoping for a glimpse Police Chief Anthony Holloway said during ...
MUSIC REVIEW www.boston.com It's no secret, U2 rocks By Sarah Rodman, Globe Staff | March 12, 2009 SOMERVILLE - U2 celebrated the number one debut of its new album "No Line on the Horizon" with an intimate gathering for a few friends last night. But even shrunk down to the cozy Somerville Theatre for the final gig on its three-city "secret show" promotional blitz, the quartet exuded its signature widescreen, "greatest band in the land" charm and swagger. For an audience of 800 or so ecstatic U2 fans in the theatre, and those tuned in around the world via radio simulcast, the Irish rockers spent 60 minutes powering through a handful of tracks with stadium-size energy and gamely fielding audience questions with poise and good humor. The performance portion blasted off with the fuzzy clangor of "Get on Your Boots." Bono urged folks to hop their seats and crowd the area in front of the stage and they didn't need to be told twice, deliriously jamming into any space not occupied by video equipment. (The show was videotaped for future use). The "Horizon" songs may have not fully seeped in for fans yet but the band made a forceful case for their quality in the bass thrum and keening uplift of "Magnificent," the muscularity of "Breathe," and Bono's falsetto flights and The Edge's chiming guitar on "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight." The mini-set ended with a kinetic "Vertigo" with plenty of help from the crowd on vocals. Five minutes later the band members returned to sit ...
U2 leaving the Somerville Theatre after their super secret, super exclusive show promoting their new album: No Line On the Horizon. Rock legends serve up Magnificent treat By Jed Gottlieb | Thursday, March 12, 2009 | www.bostonherald.com | Music News U2 rocked Somerville! Its not an exclamation any of us ever expected to hear, but last night the surreal became real as the iconic Irish rockers assaulted the tiny Somerville Theatre with the force of an atomic bomb. This is a vaudeville theater, its not for shy people like myself, a beaming Bono told the crowd of about 800 lucky radio winners and VIPs - some of whom came from across the country to be there. Then, spotting a copy of U2s first EP from 1979 bobbing up and down in the audience, he added that the band hadnt played a theater this small since way back then. The final stop on U2s 3 Nights Live promo tour, the show featured a filmed 30-minute Q and A session and an absurdly awesome five-song set Get on Your Boots, Magnificent, Breathe and Ill Go Crazy If I Dont Go Crazy Tonight, all from new album No Line on the Horizon, and Vertigo. Bono, seemingly not feeling the audience was giving 100 percent, immediately egged the first dozen rows to leap over their seats and crush to the front. The mass of people cheering at the edge of the stage spiked the energy and even up in the balcony fans were screaming along to lyrics theyd just learned. Thanks for sticking with us all these years, Bono said. It took us 30 years for us to figure this (expletive) out. Approaching 50, the guys dont look as pretty up close as they did on the glossy, high-def stadium ...

Well, actually it was Rosemary Bono, a nice Italian lady who waiting to see if she'd see the Irish Bono and his U2 bandmates appear near the Somerville Theater in Davis Square. But we had a heck of a time talking.
Buses pull up to Davis Square - the crowd goes nuts.
Shots of crowds outside and behind Somerville Theater. Sway from MTV comes and talks to some folks. Also footage of Larry Mullen Jr. and The Edge greeting fans. Missed Bono, who had come out earlier.
