The UAA campus came out in force for the annual barbecue celebration Juneteenth. This date commemorates June 19, 1855, when the last slaves in America were freed. The date came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. In Anchorage, the rain held off and the sun even peaked through as a large crowd of students, staff and faculty enjoyed the comaraderie of the annual event. Music was provided by the John Damberg Latin Jazz Quintet and the menu included burgers, hot dogs, catfish, red beans and rice, jambalaya and more.
In this video, UAA alumna Beth Stuart describes her career path after graduation from UAA in business and accepting a position at KPMG, where she made partner last October. She now recruits for candidates at UAA on behalf of her firm.
A group of 11 students are helping to grow a culture of philanthropy at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The students, members of the Universitys Phonathon program, are connecting with alumni far and wide to share UAA news and events, and to seek financial support for UAAs expanding programs. The Phonathon program raised an astounding $125000 this year alone, and has brought in a total of $500000 to UAA since its inception in 2004. More than 2000 alumni donors have supported their alma mater through UAAs Annual Giving program.
Broken Lizard was at UAA on April 23rd 2010. Broken Lizard is a comedy troupe that has made successful movies such as Supertroopers, Club Dread and Beerfest. This part starts out with Kevin Heffernan as his character from Super Troopers Rod Farva talking to the audience. Nursing students tackle a special project their senior year. For eight students in Fall 2009, it meant meeting newly arrived Bhutanese and Sudanese refugees and determining their health needs.
