The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA), the representative organization of the over 1 million Americans of Ukrainian descent, strongly condemns the recent violation of the human rights of Director of the National Memorial "The Prison at Lonsky", Ruslan Zabilyj, who on September 8, 2010 was detained without justification and interrogated by six representatives of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU). The Memorial at which Mr. Zabilyj works is a recently opened museum to the victims of repressions at the Lonsky prison in Lviv, Ukraine, where thousands of Ukrainian political prisoners suffered under Polish, Nazi and Soviet occupations. Mr. Zabilyj, a historian, oversees the Memorial, and serves as a researcher and archivist.

A documentary chronicling the formation and history of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion - one of the finest units of the legendary XV International Brigade that fought for Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The Battalion's namesake was inspired by the leaders of the failed 1837 Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions - William Lyon Mackenzie and Louis-Joseph Papineau who sought to overthrow British rule and establish an independent Canadian Republic. At first most Canadian volunteers fought with the Lincoln Battalion. As the name suggests - this formation was primarily comprised of Americans but most Canadians initially fought with this unit along with a group of Irishmen informally called the "Connolly Column" comprised mainly of Irish Republican Army volunteers. No fewer than nine Irish-Canadians had also been IRA members before immigrating or fleeing to Canada. While with the Americans significant numbers of Canadians fought at the fierce Battle of Jarama where at least nine were killed. Despite the Canadian government's neutrality and the new Foreign Enlistment Act which made it a criminal offence to enlist in a foreign army, by spring 1937 so many had done so that the formation of a Canadian battalion was authorized and in May 1937 the 60th Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion of the XV International Brigade was born. Iskra Ukrainian Dance Ensemble and Academy was founded over ten years ago as one of the studios of the late Roma Pryma Bohachevsky, a renowned teacher and choreographer. Iskra is currently under the artistic direction of Andrij Cybyk, and consists of over 80 students ranging in age from 6 to 21. Under Mr. Cybyks tutelage the students learn and perform folk dances from various areas of Ukraine, always with careful attention to ethnographic details in both costumes and choreography. Iskra was one of only two Ukrainian folk dance youth ensembles chosen to perform at Lincoln Center in 2004 with Syzokryli, the renowned semi-professional Ukrainian dance troupe, at a concert celebrating the life and works of the late Roma Pryma Bohachevsky. The group can regularly be seen at Ukrainian festivals in the tri-state area, including 7th Street in New York City, Yonkers, Newark, Bound Brook, Morris County, and others. Iskra took part in the Metro Stars Ukrainian Day in September 2005, performing not only for fellow Ukrainian-Americans who had gathered there, but for all those who were attending the Metro Stars game that day. As a youth ensemble, Iskra is particularly proud and pleased to share their love of their heritage with others. They have performed at World Culture events at Newark Academy and in the Westfield, Morris Plains, Metuchen, and New Providence public school systems and at events sponsored by Plainsboro Township, Middlesex County, and the State of NJ.
