With a new set of custom motor controllers, we were able to test some of the more interesting features of the Cap Kart. Then, the driver can use this extra energy in the form of a boost by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

This is the first test drive of the Cap Kart, a unique electric go-kart with capacitive regeneration and boost mode. It was a good test of the custom DC motor controller and data acquisition system. Once the field controller is repaired, testing with the ultracapacitor can begin.

The PPPM makes quick work of a mountain of smoothie ingredients (more than a liter when blended). The 500 Watt blender, powered by the 1,000 Watt inverter, drains the 58 Farad Ultracapacitor down to 11 Volts in about 5 seconds, even with help from the PPPM. The rider averages an easy 75 Watts throughout the movie. Total pedaling time needed to generate the smoothie energy - about 45 delicious seconds. A fit rider, pedaling hard, could power a smoothie cart turning out a half-liter smoothie every 30 seconds or so. Mmmmmmmmmmm. When the ultracapacitor is full of ions, the potential is reversed and the ions are flushed out as a waste. This process uses no additional salts and therefore is more environmentally friendly than resin type exchange systems.
Because of enormous production of heat in previous setup (breaking contacts simple can't withstand it) scaled down schematic to 6V battery, made mechanical switch running independently from 1.5V battery (on this scale it's easy to adjust and maintain), and connected to 7.2V electric motor instead of bulb. Main source of back emf - heavy coil of one side of transformer. Good news is - the system runs about 3 hrs without voltage drop (compare to instant voltage decline if running without coil). Actually what's going on here - back emf spikes of hi-voltage fired back to battery and slowing down process of chemical sulfitation what keeps the battery charged. Wondering if it will work with bank of good ultracapacitors instead (or in parallel) with battery.
Seventeen Student Teams from the Nation's Top Schools Design "Green" Hybrid-Powered Vehicles; University of Wisconsin and Ohio State University Finish Second and Third Seventeen engineering teams from the nation's top universities were challenged by the Department of Energy in a groundbreaking four-year competition called Challenge X: Crossover to Sustainable Mobility. The teams had to re-engineer a Chevy Equinox crossover using a range of hybrid, plug-in or fuel cell propulsion systems to increase energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. The Mississippi State team designed a through-the-road parallel hybrid electric vehicle powered by a 1.9L GM direct injection turbo diesel engine fueled by bio diesel (B20). It achieved a 38 percent increase in fuel economy over the production vehicle on a modified urban test cycle. Additional highlights of the Challenge X vehicles include: - Plug-in Hybrid - The University of California at Davis is the only team to use plug-in hybrid technology for the energy source for its Challenge X vehicle. - Biodiesel Fuel Source - Twelve teams used biodiesel fuel (B20). - Hydrogen Fuel Cell - The University of Waterloo has a dedicated hydrogen fuel cell for its primary propulsion source, and as a result, its vehicle emits zero emissions from the tailpipe. - Hydrogen Fuel Source - Pennsylvania State University, Texas Tech University and the University of Tulsa used hydrogen as a supplementary or secondary propulsion source. Penn State injected hydrogen into its vehicle's diesel engine as an emissions abatement strategy. - Belt Alternator/Starter Technology - Five teams, including Ohio State University and Virginia Tech, used belt alternator/starter technology for an electric performance assist in their vehicles. - Ultracapacitors - West Virginia University and the University of Akron used ultracapacitors to source high levels of power for short periods of time and recapture energy from braking.
