Musicologist Annegret Fauser, Ph.D., discusses her research on the role and impact of American musical composers during World War II. Fauser, professor of music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Musicological Society, is completing a book, "Sounds of War: Music in the United States during World War II." World War II presented a unique opportunity to expand the focus on classical music in the United States, she says. "Never before was there so much government support for classical music." Composers, such as Marc Bitzstein, volunteered for military service. While in the US Airforce, Blitzstein wrote the "Airborne Symphony." Professor Fauser also discusses why she became a musicologist, and her vision for the Journal of the American Musicological Society. Interview by Dee Reid, director of communications, UNC College of Arts and Sciences.

This video shows two experiments that help explain why and how an oil spill on the seafloor, similar to the current BP leak in the Gulf of Mexico, could form underwater oil plumes that do not rise to the surface. The reasons include: •whether a spill is released in the form of a turbulent jet, or is under less pressure •the density of the surrounding water, due to temperature and salinity. In both tests, the tank contains salt water that's denser at the bottom than at the top (bottom 1.06 g/cc, top 1.015g/cc). The first video shows a green-colored alcohol/water mixture being released into the tank; the second experiment shows red gauge oil being released. Both the oil and alcohol mixtures are about the same density (approximately 0.9g/cc) and are released at the same rate (about 0.8 gallons/minute). As you can see, the first more turbulent jet is trapped underwater in a horizontal plume when it reaches the level where the surrounding water density changes; the second less turbulent jet is not trapped, and the oil rises to the surface. The experiments were conducted by Richard McLaughlin, Ph.D., and Roberto Camassa, Ph.D., fluid dynamics experts in the mathematics department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill "We've been thinking that the recent news about underwater oil plumes is very reminiscent of these jet experiments, in which the effect of the strong turbulence is creating an emulsion which can lead to an underwater trapping," McLaughlin said. Thursday night's wild-card round concluded with one of the most dramatic last-second turn-arounds in the show's history -- a decision to expand the final group from 12 to 13 to accommodate UNC-Chapel Hill student Desai. Earlier in the show, he performed Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative," earning generally positive marks from the judges. "You slayed it," Randy Jackson said, although fellow judge Simon Cowell was more measured. "You're like an enthusiastic dog," Cowell said. "Not the best singer we'll hear, but people like you." After his performance, Desai got in a shout-out to his hometown and the memory of Eve Carson, the late student-body president who was murdered a year ago Thursday. "It's been a tough day. We're all thinking of Eve, and I love you, Chapel Hill," Desai said. As the judges announced their decisions at the end of the show, Desai was pitted against Matt Giraud for the 12th and final spot. Giraud was awarded the last spot, until Cowell announced that the final group would be a top-13 this year. North Carolina's other finalist, Ricky Braddy of Elizabeth City, did not make it through. Desai will resume competition on "American Idol" on Tuesday.
The UNC-Chapel Hill community gathered in the Pit to remember Eve Carson.
