OMB Director Peter Orszag and Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers Christina Romer speak and answer questions from the press about the Presidents Fiscal Year 2011 Budget. February 1, 2010.
www.weforum.org 30.01.2010 US President and Nobel Peace Laureate Barack Obama awoke high expectations with his slogan "Yes, we can!" After one year of presidency, it can be seen where President Obama has introduced political innovation and where he has not. To what extent has the impact of the financial and economic crisis been curbed in the US? What are the relations between the US and the Arab countries? To what extent has the international political situation on climate changed due to the new position of the US? Does the Nobel Prize favour or harm Obama's Administration? This session is co-organized with the Federation of Swiss Protestant Churches (SEK-FEPS). Susan M. Mr. PASCRELL. Thank you. Mr. Speaker, last week we saw that 5.8 million Americans were collecting unemployment benefits at the end of October. I want to remind my friends on both sides of the aisle that in the first quarter of this year, we saw a loss of 691000. The stimulus went into effect--partially, anyway--after we passed it in February with no votes from the other side, and in the third quarter of this year, we're at a loss of 256000. That's a gain of 435000 jobs. You compare that to the last year, the last 4 years of the former administration, and I think that the stimulus has been a great help. This Congress is working hard to get people back on their feet. For this reason, it is imperative that, today, we pass the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act. I am proud to say that we've also extended the homebuyer assistance through the first-time homebuyer tax credit while putting in place new and significant fraud protection. I think that's important. It came out in Mr. Lewis' hearings, and we've done something about that. I applaud Chairman LEWIS for convening a hearing through the Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee on the first-time homebuyer tax credit, which brought light to some of the abuses that were plaguing this important credit. The American people need to know that this Congress is working to remedy the insufficient regulation and oversight that has plagued our Nation for too long. I urge all my colleagues on both sides to take swift and decisive ...

Congressman Jackson speaks outside on the steps of the Capitol about the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act which the House passed on November 5, 2009 which will provide 14 weeks of additional benefits to workers that have or will soon exhaust their benefits and an additional 6 weeks for states with unemployment rates at or above 8.5%.
Congressman Joe Courtney speaks on behalf of HR 3548, which passed the House of Representatives on November 5, 2009. The legislation extends an additional 14 weeks of unemployment benefits to all states, including Connecticut; extends homebuyer tax credits for first-time homebuyers and military families; and provides relief to small businesses by extending a five year net operating loss carry-back to 2009. The legislation is fully paid for and will not add to the deficit.
