The Century of the Self is a British television documentary film that studies the legacy of the Freudians, and their school of psychoanalysis. The second episode of the series 'The Engineering of Consent' focuses on the aftermath of the Second World War and the express concern to repess certain aspects of human nature. The programme explores the way western corporations and governments have sought to reinvent man completely throughout the 20th century by converting and measuring him into a unit of individual want in a mass age.
Democracy NOW! - DN! We host a roundtable discussion with independent British journalist Stephen Grey, Pentagon Papers whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, former State Department official in Afghanistan, Matthew Hoh, independent journalist Rick Rowley and investigative historian Gareth Porter. More than 90000 internal records of US military actions in Afghanistan over the past six years have been published by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The documents provide a devastating portrait of the war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, how a secret black ops special forces unit hunts down targets for assassination or detention without trial, how Taliban attacks have soared and how Pakistan is fueling the insurgency. A documentary chronicling the formation and history of the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion - one of the finest units of the legendary XV International Brigade that fought for Republican Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The Battalion's namesake was inspired by the leaders of the failed 1837 Upper and Lower Canada Rebellions - William Lyon Mackenzie and Louis-Joseph Papineau who sought to overthrow British rule and establish an independent Canadian Republic. At first most Canadian volunteers fought with the Lincoln Battalion. As the name suggests - this formation was primarily comprised of Americans but most Canadians initially fought with this unit along with a group of Irishmen informally called the "Connolly Column" comprised mainly of Irish Republican Army volunteers. No fewer than nine Irish-Canadians had also been IRA members before immigrating or fleeing to Canada. While with the Americans significant numbers of Canadians fought at the fierce Battle of Jarama where at least nine were killed. Despite the Canadian government's neutrality and the new Foreign Enlistment Act which made it a criminal offence to enlist in a foreign army, by spring 1937 so many had done so that the formation of a Canadian battalion was authorized and in May 1937 the 60th Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion of the XV International Brigade was born. Though the majority, the Mackenzie-Papineau Battalion was never entirely Canadian. Not all Canadians served with the Mac-Paps either. Even after the ...

DE VERAJune 2, 2010, 4:15pmThe United Kingdom-based aid agency Oxfam called on climate negotiators presently gathered in Bonn, Germany to report and deliver openly on the US$100 billion climate financing as it pledged to mitigate the effects of climate change, particularly the Philippines, which is the most vulnerable country in Southeast Asia. The second round of United Nations-led climate talks, which kicked off last Monday with representatives from 182 governments, will pick up on issues that were not resolved during last year's UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. In Bonn, negotiators are tasked to deliver a long-term global solution to climate change and put a table of emissions reduction from 37 industrialized countries that have ratified the Kyoto Protocol for the period beyond 2012. It is expected that industrialized countries would also fulfill the financial pledge they made during the Copenhagen conference, before the next UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Cancun, Mexico in December. Oxfam warned that the $100 billion a year pledged by rich nations to help fight climate change could fail the poorest people, if recent moves to deliver climate cash as loans continue. Oxfam senior policy advisor Antonio Hill said it is becoming clear that a significant proportion of the first installments of climate cash, to be delivered between 2010 and 2012 will be loans not grants ...

April 22, 1971 After returning to the United States, Kerry joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). Then numbering about 20000, VVAW was considered by some (including the administration of President Richard Nixon) to be an effective, if controversial, component of the antiwar movement. On April 22, 1971, Kerry became the first Vietnam veteran to testify before Congress about the war, when he appeared before a Senate committee hearing on proposals relating to ending the war. He was still a member of the United States Navy Reserve, holding the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. Wearing green fatigues and service ribbons, he spoke for nearly two hours with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in what has been named the Fulbright Hearing, after the Chairman of the proceedings, Senator JW Fulbright. Kerry began with a prepared speech, in which he presented the conclusions of the Winter Soldier Investigation, and then went on to address larger policy issues. The day after this testimony, Kerry participated in a demonstration with thousands of other veterans in which he and other veterans threw their medals and ribbons over a fence erected at the front steps of the United States Capitol building to dramatize their opposition to the war. Jack Smith, a Marine, read a statement explaining why the veterans were returning their military awards to the government. For more than two hours, almost 1000 angry veterans tossed their medals, ribbons, hats, jackets, and military ...

Below is the text of the letter: "In one year, the American people are witnessing the greatest lie that is cleverly orchestrated by President Obama and his whole administration. The lie is a potent aggression that feeds the needs of people who either have not educated themselves enough to understand the assault upon us all or the very poor and needy who live to be taken care of. President Obama feeds these people poison, giving them the idea that they are entitled to take from the wealthier who have lived and worked in a democracy that understands that capitalism is the only truth that keeps a nation healthy and fed. Now the lie goes very deep and President Obama has been cleverly trained in the Alinsky method and it would be very important that every American knows what that method is. There was a rather egregious error within this "description" section. That occurred 7 September. I've had help, luckily, with the typing of all this. There was misunderstanding. Having to do with the approximation of the number Pi. { Archimedes' constant } By means of calculating the area of the unit circle. Using "Romberg's method" of approximate integration. { a modified form of the "extended trapezoidal rule" } As opposed to power series expansion, of multiple argument functions. Such as atan ( 1/3 ) + atan ( 1/2 ) and atan ( 2/5 ) + atan ( 3/7 ) { these equal arctangent ( 1 ) { which in radians measure, not degrees } is a fourth the value of Pi } The later one, I mentioned, converges more rapidly than any other. Of the two argument kind. And said that I had found it and another myself. When I was learning. And didn't yet have a calculator, much less a PC. And that it is included in some textbooks. And anyway, I apologize for any confusion. --- I also want to say that I haven't "hacked" since 02. When my old PC, partially self/destructed. lol And that I never did anything malicious. I've not damaged any systems. I used to have some fun with the "South Bend Indiana Hackers Club". lol I wanted computer skills. And that's the way to learn. --- I'd also say that I'm concerned. That my fellow Americans. Have been brainwashed into thinking. That communism isn't any longer a danger to "western" democracy. It most, sure as all hell, is ! I'm not happy that I hadn't a choice ...

The Vancouver-based Dr. Gabor Maté argues that too many doctors seem to have forgotten what was once a commonplace assumptionthat emotions are deeply implicated in both the development of illness and in the restoration of health. Based on medical studies and his own experience with chronically ill patients at the Palliative Care Unit at Vancouver Hospital, where he was the Medical Coordinator for seven years, Dr. Gabor Mate makes the case that there are important links between the mind and the immune system. He found that stress and individual emotional makeup play critical roles in an array of diseases.

Harvey Franklin Wasserman (born December 31, 1945) is an American journalist, author, democracy activist, and advocate for renewable energy. He has been a strategist and organizer in the anti-nuclear movement in the United States for over 30 years. He has been a featured speaker on Today, Nightline, National Public Radio, CNN Lou Dobbs Tonight and other major media outlets. Wasserman is senior advisor to Greenpeace USA and the Nuclear Information and Resource Service, an investigative reporter, and senior editor of The Columbus Free Press where his coverage, with Bob Fitrakis, has prompted Rev. Jesse Jackson to call them "the Woodward and Bernstein of the 2004 election." On March 29, 1979, there was a cooling system malfunction that caused a partial melt-down of the reactor core. This loss of coolant accident resulted in the release of a significant amount of radioactivity, estimated at 43000 curies (1.59 PBq) of radioactive krypton gas, but less than 20 curies (740 GBq) of the especially hazardous iodine-131, into the surrounding environment. The nuclear power industry claims that there were no deaths, injuries or adverse health effects from the accident, but a peer-reviewed study by Steven Wing of the University of North Carolina found that lung cancer and leukemia rates were 2 to 10 times higher downwind of TMI than upwind, and also showed that there was plant and animal chromosomal damage, but without considering the effects of stress or improved screening. January 1983 www.amazon.com Watch the full interview: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com George Seldes (16 November 1890 - 2 July 1995) was an American investigative journalist and media critic. Francisco Franco Bahamonde (4 December 1892 in Ferrol - 20 November 1975 in Madrid), commonly known as Francisco Franco, or simply Franco, was a military general and dictator of Spain from October 1936, and de facto regent of the nominally restored Kingdom of Spain from 1947 until his death in 1975. Franco used the title Caudillo de España, por la gracia de Dios from 1936 onwards, meaning, Leader of Spain, by the grace of God. During his almost forty year reign, Franco's governance went through various different phases, although the most common ideological features present throughout included a strong sense of Spanish nationalism and protection of the country's territorial integrity, Catholicism, anti-communism and traditional values. From a military family, Franco originally set out for a career in the Spanish Navy. However, the navy had reduced in size since Spain had lost much of its empire, so he became a soldier instead. During the early period of his career he fought in Morocco during the Rif War, rising to the position of general. Afterwards he was stationed on the Spanish mainland and saw service suppressing an anarchist-led strike in 1934; defending the stability of Alcalá-Zamora's conservative republican government. Everything changed in 1936 with the election of the Popular ...

Maulana Abdus Sobhan's Speech Maulana Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has asked the government to take effective steps to prevent India from constructing Tipaimukh dam in the upstream of Borak River in the Indian state of Monipur. He also urged the government to guess the impact and importance of the matter and take the issue seriously. The Jamaat Ameer, also a former minister, said this while addressing a rally at the citys Paltan Maidan Wednesday. Dhaka City unit of Jamaat arranged the programme in protest at the Indian attempt to erect Tipaimukh dam on a transboundary river, flouting the international river and environment rules. Maulana Nizami also said, though the credibility of the 2008 national election is questionable, Jamaat welcomed the new government for the greater interest of democracy. We hoped that the unexpected situation during the immediate-past unelected regime will end through the election. But now does anyone see any sign of good hope? he questioned. Since the announcement of the election result, a reign of terror was unleashed, snatching of tenders became rampant and mugging in the streets became widespread. But the government failed to take any effective step to contain the crimes in order to improve the law and order in the country. Besides, it has unleashed oppression on the opposition parties, he said accusing the government of maintaining a policy of division and disunity instead of national unity and harmony and ...
Grade School embarks on First Ever Certificate Course in Politics and Governance Twenty seven Ateneo Grade School grade school teachers took time off to take the first ever Certificate Course in Politics and Governance from May 11 to May 16, 2009 at Conference room 3/4 at the Social Sciences Building of the Loyola Schools. Offered by the Loyola Schools Department of Political Science under Ms Anne Candelaria, the certificate course is a 3 unit graduate elective on the theory and practice of politics in the Philippines. The objective of the program is to provide AGS teachers an opportunity to obtain a diploma while learning new perspectives in teaching social studies. The seminar sought to provide a deeper analysis of the fundamental concepts and theories as well as emergent perspectives that frame domestic politics and governance. According to the course lecturer, Mrs. Anne K. Candelaria, Araling Panlipunan will decide how citizens 20 years from now will behave. During Aristotle's time, citizenship=virtuousness. At the end of the day, the role of the school is to produce citizens who love their identity. So she exposed teachers to state and non-state actors in the processes and outcomes of politics and they gained a more profound ...

Is Posse Comitatus Dead? US Troops on US Streets In a barely noticed development, a US Army unit is now training for domestic operations under the control of US Army North, the Army service component of Northern Command. An initial news report in the Army Times newspaper last month noted that in addition to emergency response the force may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control. The military has since claimed the force will not be used for civil unrest, but questions remain. We speak to Army Col. Michael Boatner, future operations division chief of USNORTHCOM, and Matthew Rothschild, editor of The Progressive magazine. [includes rush transcript]

She was at ground zero on 9/11 and was on the front lines at the RNC where she was FALSELY (charges since dropped) arrested along with her film crew (all credentialed press). She ran from the delegate floor to the street to FIND the cops & help her crew who was being held and her credentials were illegally stripped; she was wrongfully detained with her colleagues. Do not attempt to discredit her as she is well respected. Amy's been reporting for over a decade. Body of War: New Doc Tells the Story of a Paralyzed Iraq War Veteran Coming to Terms with Disability and Speaking Out Against War As the US occupation of Iraq enters its sixth year, we take a look at a new documentary that captures the struggles of one of the tens of thousands of US troops injured in the war. Body of War is directed by filmmaker Ellen Spiro and veteran broadcaster Phil Donahue. The film tells the story of Iraq war veteran Tomas Young. On April 4, 2004, his fifth day in Iraq, Young's unit came under fire in Baghdad. He was left paralyzed, never to walk again. Released from medical care three months later, Young returned home to become an active member in Iraq Veterans Against the War. We play excerpts of Body of War and speak with Tomas Young and with filmmakers Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro. [includes rush transcript]
In memory of Dan Keating, who passed away on October 2, 2007, this is dedicated. (This video was originally on my other channel. Sorry for any confusion!) -------- DAN KEATING ORATION Oration delivered by Ruairí Ó Brádaigh, President Republican Sinn Féin at the funeral of Republican Veteran and Patron of Republican Sinn Féin Dan Keating in Co. Kerry on Friday October 5. "We stand by Dan Keating s grave in all humility, for this was an Irishman and a Kerryman who gave more than 90 years of service to the All-Ireland Republic of 1916 and the First (All-Ireland) Dáil. But we are fiercely proud of his long lifetime of service. For more than four score and ten years since he first took the Oath of Allegiance to that Republic, Dan fought in defence of it, stood by it and adhered faithfully to it until his death last October 2 at the great age of 105 years. He was an inspiration to succeeding generations of Republicans, never deviating from the hard road of service and suffering, striving to place All Ireland and its future in the hands of the Irish people. Uinseann Mac Eoin, in his book The IRA in the Twilight Years1923-48, published in 1997, gives us a glimpse of Dan Keating: A man who has travelled to almost every All-Ireland final in Croke Park and whose fighting goes back into Tan times. Tall and spare, at more than 90 years of age he is not stooped, carrying himself with an easy grace; his face soft, not weather beaten. Yet he has spent much of his life standing, having ...

"When the men in the [two World Wars] were asked what they were fighting for, why they were there, the interviews all came out the same way: they were there not because of democracy, not because of protecting the country; but for the other guys. They were there for love of their unit." — Dr. James Hillman, world-famous Jungian psychologist and author of "A Terrible Love of War" A segment from "The Mystery of Love," airing Dec. 13 on PBS (check local listings) — www.themysteryoflove.org
