In 2000 Downey was awarded a Nieman fellowship at Harvard University, where she studied American economic history at Harvard Business School and participated in the Harvard Trade Union Program, where young labor activists are trained to become leaders in the movement. The fellowship also gave Downey the opportunity to focus full-time on research for her new book, "The Woman Behind the New Deal: The Life of Frances Perkins, FDR's Secretary of Labor and His Moral Conscience" (2009). In 2008 Downey shared in the Pulitzer Prize awarded to the Washington Post staff for coverage of the campus slayings at Virginia Tech.

Austin, Texas rap group Mike & Ike perform live at the 2008 Beats 'N Treats Music Festival. Mike and Ike met at the University of Texas at Austin, where they were both undergraduates. They discovered a common passion for hip hop music, and Ikes budding beatmaking skills provided the backdrop for the two to hone their rhyme abilities. Years passed, with the duo improving steadily, both in the studio and on stage. Ike found his footing as a producer, and developed a distinctive style that formed a perfect canvas for their art. Mike and Ike blend smart, but accessible lyrics with the infectious sounds of jazz and soul music to create a style that recalls the best elements of where rap music has been, but stays fresh and inventive, always looking toward the future. In a musical landscape full of studio gangsters rapping about how hard they are and money they may or may not actually have, Mike & Ike are a refreshing change of pace. Rather than fall into the all-too-common trap of preaching about what they are not, however, they choose to focus on what they are, and the original styles they bring. They kick intelligent rhymes that a wide range of people can relate to their own daily struggles and triumphs. The raps show that the two are aware of and concerned about social ills, but avoid becoming overly self-righteous or cliché in their treatment of them. Mike & Ike know when to be serious, but never lose sight of the idea that hip hop should be at least as much about the good ...

BA (Hons) Politics Leeds Met's newly elected Students' Union President Lewis Coakley is graduating with a BA (Hons) in Politics. The 21 year-old from Sunderland was drawn to the University through his appreciation for the city of Leeds and after a visit with his college succeeded in impressing him. Lewis has previously been involved in Academic Affairs, working as an officer for the team for three years and has also held a part-time Union Council position, which he believes will stand him in good stead for the work he is about to take on with the Students' Union and will help him go the extra mile. Speaking about his new position Lewis said, "I am hoping to bring a combination of continuity and change to my role as SU President. I want to build on the solid foundations formed in the last few months, but there is still a need for new ideas, aspirations and ambitions." Lewis is currently studying for a Masters in Public Policy. He is hoping to be more involved in the Students' Union and has a long term aim of being in the Civil Service. In 2007 Lewis was invited to attend the Leeds Met Summer Graduation Festival as a special guest, but is looking forward to taking to the stage as a graduate himself this year.
