Octopus predictor Paul has seemingly decided he does not want to make it into the sushi menu and returned Germany the right to another victory in the World Cup tournament. When given the choice between Germany and Uruguay, who will fight for third place on Saturday, he picked his home team. So far all of Paul's predictions have proved to be correct. One last prediction left for him this season is who will get the champion's title on Sunday: Spain or the Netherlands.

A dispute that has simmered for generations between Argentina and Uruguay over the origins of the tango looks likely to end. Culture ministries in Buenos Aires and Montevideo have asked Unesco, the UNs cultural agency, to grant the dance world heritage status and declare that it originated in both countries. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports it takes two to invent the tango.
walk through Montevideo, Uruguay
Recorded February 15, 2009. Montevideo is the largest city, the capital and chief port of Uruguay. Montevideo is the only city in the country with a population over 1000000. The video begins at the port on the Rio de la Plata and then continues in downtown at Plaza Independencia (Spanish for Independence Square). It splits Ciudad Vieja from downtown Montevideo, with the Gateway of The Citadel on one side and the beginning of 18 de Julio avenue on the other. Next we stop at the Parliament Building followed by the famous sculpture La Diligencia (The Sage Coach), Monument to the last Charruas indians. Next stop was the soccer stadium followed by the Plaza de la Armada where we got nice views of the Rio de la Plata. I then walk through downtown Montevideo a bit before returning to the ship and sailing away in late afternoon. From: timvp.com
Just like in Mexico four years previously, Sweden and Uruguay met each other in their last game of the group stage. Again Sweden were the better side, but this time they won a big victory and progressed to the next round. With excellent Ronnie Hellström in goal and powerful Ralf Edström up front, Tre Kronor were a very good team, capable to compete with the worlds very best. Celeste team were eliminated from the tournament. It was a sad farewell for the twice world cup winners and they next appeared in the final rounds only twelve years later in Mexico in 1986. This is the only win of Celeste in the 1966 World cup in England. Uruguay qualified from the group stage thanks to two goaless draws, against England and Mexico respectively. In quarterfinals, they lost heavily against Germany, mainly because of scandalous refereeing. This was the only game of the tournament, played at White City staduim in London, as all the other five matches of this group took place at Wembley. This very day Wembley curiously hosted dog racing, which was considered as more important thing than the football world cup itself! Aleksey Igudesman & Sebastian Gürtler, together with the Upper Austrian Youth Orchestra in a project called "The Cyber Conductor". This is a piece called "Uruguay" composed by Aleksey Igudesman. Now yes, Igudesman is very well aware that the "traditional" music in Uruguay is different. You have Tangos and Milongas, much like in Argentina. He has been there several times, loved the people and loved the music. The point is, he writes in his own style, which in this case happens to be Jewish-Russian-Latin American-weird mix. He is also aware that it can get cold in winter, which is Europes summer and the other way round, or something. Just because Igudesman sings something, it doesnt have to be the truth. As some people might have noticed, he uses "humour" which can ocassionally result in bending of facts. And last but not least, he did love being there, thats why he wrote the song and performed it there and in other parts of the world in front of many people who seem to enjoy it. Its better than writing an "authentic" Tango (this being a dance that is not authentic in the first place, since it is inspired by many cultures) or Milonga and saying that Uruguay is crap, don't you think? Anyway, he extends his greetings to all the wonderful people of Uruguay, Uganda and Utopia and wants to say two things: Piece. And Love. And Happiness. Sorry, three things: Piece, love, happiness and contentment. Four things... The DVD (spoken text in German without subtitles!) is available at ...
