Determined and selfless with the kindest of hearts, Faraj worked tirelessly to help others up until the moments he left this world. Nearly 1400 guests joined Ambassador Reeker at the United States Embassy in Skopje to commemorate the American Independence Day. This Fourth of July was the 234th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Americans honor the Declaration for the human values that it describes and defends -- Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Americans see these values as universal -belonging not just to American citizens but all citizens of the world. In addition to celebrating the Independence Day holiday, the event also marked the first anniversary of the new Embassy. The large audience of guests - including the President, the Prime Minister, Macedonian government Ministers and representatives of other embassies in Skopje - braved the stormy weather to show their support for the red, white and blue. The rain gave guests a good reason to visit the inside of the Embassy where they were delighted to view a slide show on the 4th of July in America, as well as informational posters lining the Atrium that focused on the significance of the American holiday and highlighted American multiculturalism and inclusiveness. With the American Flag flying above the stage and the flags of the fifty states waving in the distance, The US National Anthem was performed by the Military Orchestra of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia and their rousing music offered the perfect backdrop to the reception. Sukhumvit Road reverberated to the horns, music, announcements, cheers and clappers of the Red Shirts, the familiar name by which the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship are known thanks to its colours. Any self-respecting revolutionary movement needs to be branded these days, and in Thailand the colours are red and yellow, and this week it is the turn of the formed hue to take centre stage. With the protestors numbers thinning since Sunday, today has seen a fresh influx as the organizers seek to keep the momentum from fading and a new set of red festooned pickups came rolling in from the north along with more regular city-style cars, the local pink and yellow/green taxis, and taxi motorbikes that implies the Reds have been able to mobilize some city inhabitants, something that has eluded them so far. November 4 is the 30th anniversary of the siezure, by young Iranian militants, of the US embassy in Tehran. Leading up to that event, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had returned to Iran from exile in France, leading an Islamic revolution that forced the Shah of Iran to flee. Fifty-two of the US diplomats seized by the Iranians were held captive for more than a year, most of them at the US embassy. On November 4, 1979,the United States embassy in Tehran was seized by militants in the name of Iran's new leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. For the next 444 days, it was the scene of captivity for 49 Americans, including embassy. A celebration in Algiers on November 1st, where Iran's Prime Minister Mehdi Bazargan was photographed meeting with US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, pushed the situation over the edge. The US diplomats spent nearly 15 months confined in the embassy, the foreign ministry and other Tehran locations. In the US, Americans hung yellow ribbons to show solidarity, also putting pressure on President Jimmy Carter to act. Months later, the US mounted a rescue mission. A dust storm turned the operation into a disaster, killing eight servicemen. The mission was aborted. On January 20, 1981, Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as President of the United States. On the same day the Americans were freed. 30 years later, the United States and Iran are still at odds.
