Just before sunset on April 10, 2006, a DC-9 jet landed at the international airport in the port city of Ciudad del Carmen, 500 miles east of Mexico City. As soldiers on the ground approached the plane, the crew tried to shoo them away, saying there was a dangerous oil leak. So the troops grew suspicious and searched the jet. They found 128 black suitcases, packed with 5.7 tons of cocaine, valued at $100 million. The stash was supposed to have been delivered from Caracas to drug traffickers in Toluca, near Mexico City, Mexican prosecutors later found. Law enforcement officials also discovered something else. The smugglers had bought the DC-9 with laundered funds they transferred through two of the biggest banks in the US: Wachovia Corp. and Bank of America Corp., Bloomberg Markets reports in its August 2010 issue. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation says soured loans in the US have led to a dramatic rise in bank failures, resulting in a $3.7 billion loss for the banking industry in the second quarter. In its quarterly report on the health of US banks, the agency that guarantees bank deposits says the number of banks it deems "troubled" has risen to 416, a jump of more than 100 between April and June. Although the high rate of failures has taken a toll on the agency's cash reserves, FDIC chair Sheila Bair says customer deposits are safe. VOA's Mil Arcega reports.

In another attempt to lift the economy out of a deepening recession, the US Federal Reserve Bank cut its key interest rate Tuesday by a drastic 3/4 of one percent. Top officials of the US Federal Reserve pushed the benchmark rate to a record low (a range of between zero and 0.25 percent), the tenth cut in short term rates in the past 12 months. And Wall Street greeted the Fed's action enthusiastically even in the face of two other disappointing economic reports and continued weakness in oil prices. VOA's Robert Raffaele has more.

Each year downtown LA's tallest building (and the highest skyscraper west of the Mississippi), the 75-story US Bank Tower (formerly Library Tower), plays host to a unique athletic event that also servers as a fundraiser for the benefit of the Ketchum downtown YMCA. Starting at street level, participants ascend to the roof of the building, traversing some 1500 steps over the course of more than 1/5th of a mile straight up in a unique test of endurance. This was my first time participating and had no idea what to expect in terms of my performance or how long it might take to finish. I had conservatively estimated somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 minutes. I was very very surprised to find out afterward that my official finish time was 16:48. And what an intense and grueling time it was.
