ALAMEDA, Calif. The US Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell returned to its home port here on Coast Guard Island Wednesday, following a six-month deployment circumnavigating the globe. During the patrol, the crew conducted joint operations with the USS Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group, in support of US Central Command, participating in anti-piracy operations and training of foreign navies. The crew helped to reopen diplomatic relations with Libya as the first US naval ship to visit the country in more than 40 years. Boutwell's crew also found and rescued 22 people who were adrift in the Gulf of Oman for more than three days without food or water. The government of Iran praised the crew for their actions. During its deployment Boutwell also participated in six theatre security operations events including Pakistans multi-national naval peace exercise AMAN 09. They also responded to a distress call from the motor-vessel Skaftafell resulting in the interdiction and deterrence of seven suspected pirates and ensuring the safety of the Skaftafells crew and cargo. The crew also volunteered for humanitarian-aid projects including a wetlands rehabilitation project in Malaysia and the refurbishment of a retirement home in India. Boutwell is a 378-foot cutter with a crew of 179. Its missions include search and rescue, law enforcement, maritime security, and national defense. April 13, 2009 - The United States of America has triumphed over the pirates. As youve heard by now, the Muslim malcontents had a machine gun leveled at the captured captain's back on their boat, and US Navy snipers killed them with a single bullet each. Captain Richard Phillips was freed five days after his ship was hijacked off the Somali coast. The real credit here goes to the Navy SEALs who shot these pirates. They performed their duties superbly and gave honor to their countrys name. And we should also salute Obama for his resolve in ending the pirate takeover of the cargo vessel and the killing of the pirates. However, if we ask the question, Has Obama faced his first military challenge and won? The answer is: Absolutely not. This was not a real military challenge. It was a piracy challenge. Obamas first military challenge was from North Korea. Kim Jong Mentally Ill fired a rocket and Obama failed to stop him from doing so and failed to act in any meaningful way. That can not be forgotten in the euphoria of the moment. When President Reagan sent US Air Force planes to bomb terrorist sites in Libya in 1986, he did real damage to the dictator Ghadafis ability to launch terrorist attacks. Libya was no longer viewed as a serious terrorist threat after this point. While it reflects well on the US Military, the killing of these pirates wont put a stop to the actions of others just like them. Their infrastructure remains intact. Richard Phillips, the master of Motor Vessel Maersk-Alabama. This was an incredible team effort, and I am extremely proud of the tireless efforts of all the men and women who made this rescue possible said Vice Adm. Bill Gortney, commander, US Naval Forces Central Command. The actions of Capt. Phillips and the civilian mariners of Maersk-Alabama were heroic.
