Japan's Geospatial Information Authority (GSI) runs the worlds largest GPS network known as GEONET (www.gsi.go.jp This network consists of approximately 1200 permanent GPS receiver stations distributed over the country of Japan. Currently most of the GEONET stations are capturing raw GPS data at a rate of once per second (1 Hz) and these data were processed in order to determine the second by second motion of each GEONET station as the Tohoku-oki earthquake occurred. The animation shown in this article is sped up by a factor of 24 in order to make the propagation of coseismic deformation easier to see. In the movie, three separate panels are shown that depict the northern part of the Japanese main island (Honshu). In the middle right of the map, the location of the earthquake epicenter is shown with an orange star. The left most map shows changes in station positions in the north/south direction, with warmer colors representing motion to the north and cooler colors motion to the south. The middle map shows motion in the east/west direction with warmer colors showing a motion to the west and cooler colors motion to the east.
