Charity Treks AIDS Vaccine Bike Trek, August 10-14, 2010 If you are looking for a multi-day, charitable, challenging, friendly, beautiful, New England, August ride with passionate cyclists, consider Charity Treks. The Charity Treks AIDS Vaccine Bike Trek is in it 9th year. Burlington, Vermont to Portland, Maine is the 445 miles of challenge, reward and fun you'll encounter with the friendliest of folks from all over. There is a lot to like about this ride. Primarily, as a fundraiser the return to the beneficiaries is an almost unheard of, 100%! That's right, 100% of donations are split between the two beneficiaries, The Emory Vaccine Center in Atlanta and the UCLA AIDS Institute in California. All for the purpose of furthering research to discover an AIDS vaccine. These dollars raised are seed money and on average every dollar raised is leveraged into $17 additional research dollars in the form of prestigious foundation and federal grants that scientists wouldn't have otherwise. The organizer of the ride drives through DC on his way to Burlington and loads up bikes and gear and delivers them back after the ride for $75. Much less expense and hassle than getting it all there and back yourself. Registration fee is $175 and the expectation is to raise at least $500 for the cause but the average fundraising per cyclist ranges $1200-$2000. It's a small group of riders and crew (usually 50-70 riders). Pack your camping gear, we stay at campsites along the way. Most meals, SAG ...

It's been almost three decades since HIV/AIDS emerged as a threat to global health. Although the United Nations' Program on AIDS (UNAIDS) reports a decrease in the rate of new infections, the number of people living with HIV or AIDS has grown to more than 33 million, in part due to increased access to anti-retroviral drugs. VOA's Laurel Bowman takes a look at where we've been and where we are headed in treatment for HIV/AIDS.
