My daughter Amy had the Vagus Nerve Stimulator put in on the 22nd of July in Portsmouth, VA at their wonderful hospital! 5 days later it was turned on and yesterday it was turned up. Amy has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome - for some reason someone started an ugly rumor that Amy didn't have the VNS surgery, I hope this video will help people see that rumors and gossip are not always true - seeing is believing

ALOXI is a second generation 5HT3 receptor antagonist. 5HT3 receptors are located on the nerve terminals of the vagus nerve peripherally and centrally in the chemoreceptor trigger zone of the brain. It is thought that chemotherapeutic agents produce nausea and vomiting by releasing serotonin (or sometimes referred to as 5HT) from the cells of the small intestine, and that the release of serotonin activates 5HT3 receptors located on vagal afferents to initiate the vomiting reflects. ALOXI acts to block the action of serotonin binding to the receptors on the vagus nerve, helping to prevent nausea and vomiting. See: specialisedtherapeutics.com.au
Douglas Labar, MD, Chief of the Division of Clinical Neurophysiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City discusses surgical treatments available for patients with epilepsy. These treatments are removal of the area of the brain where seizures are originating, and the implanting of devices that serve as "pacemakers for the brain" that stabilize electrical activity and reduce or prevent the frequency and/or severity of seizures. The devices Dr. Labar discusses are the Vagul Nerve Stimulator (sometimes called the Vagus Nerve Stimulator), Deep Brain Stimulator, and Responsive Neuro Stimulator.
Epilepsy affects more than 3 million Americans and 50 million people worldwide. It can develop unexpectedly with no known cause and at any age. An estimated 35% of people with epilepsy have uncontrolled seizures. Antiepileptic drugs alone in this population are not effective. Alternative treatments, like VNS Therapy, may be an effective option. VNS Therapy is non-drug treatment option for refractory epilepsy that works through a pacemaker-like device implanted under the skin in the chest area, that helps control seizures by regulating electrical activity in the brain. VNS Therapy is not brain surgery. VNS Therapy consists of an implanted pacemaker-like device and stimulating lead. The thin flexible lead runs under the skin and wraps around the left vangus nerve in the neck. The generator, roughly the size of a small pocket watch and weighing less than one ounce, is implanted under the skin in the patient's left chest area. The lead is then attached to the generator. VNS Therapy delivers mild, intermittent stimulations to the patient's left vagus nerve, which then activate various areas of the brain helping to prevent electrical irregularities that cause seizures. A unique benefit of VNS Therapy is the ability to control stimulation with the use of a special magnet. The magnet can activate the device to deliver an immediate extra dose of stimulation which can potentially stop a seizure or decrease its intensity. The magnet is also used to control side effects of the ...

The offending artery literally splits the vagal nerve causing hoarseness, and pain with swallowing or speaking. The glossopharyngel nerve is relatively spared by the offending artery making this nearly a pure vagal nerve neuralgia. www.cduma.com

Google Tech Talk December 9, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Dacher Keltner. Prof. Keltner will be presenting work related to his recent book "Born to be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life": "In this talk I will survey the latest evolutionary and neuroscience that aligns with Charles Darwin's thesis that sympathy is our strongest instinct, or that we are born to be good. I will take the audience on a tour of recent evolutionary thought, which suggests that our hyper vulnerable offspring rearranged our brains, genes, and social structures. I will detail new research on the vagus nerve and oxytocin, branches of the nervous system that have evolved to enable cooperation, trust, and caretaking. I detail new signaling systems -- tactile communication and vocalization -- which are critical to the transmission of prosociality across individuals. Throughout the talk I integrate the latest science with the wisdom found in Eastern thought." Dr. Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, and Director for Greater Good Science Center.

sensitivities to the gag reflex. The afferent limb of the reflex is supplied by the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX), which inputs to the nucleus solitarius, and the efferent limb is supplied by the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) from the nucleus ambiguus. Absence of the gag reflex can be a symptom of a number of severe medical conditions, such as damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve, the vagus nerve, or brain death.
