In flashbacks, Stefan and Damon recall the long-ago actions taken by townspeople including their father, Guiseppe Salvatore, and Pearl, leading to the devastating events that caused the rift in their relationship. In the present, Bonnies date with Ben takes a frightening turn. Elena helps Stefan as he and Damon race to find the missing journal that belonged to Elenas ancestor. Stefan learns the reason behind Alarics interest in both the journal and the towns history. Damon discovers that an old acquaintance has returned to town with an agenda he understands. Feeling the powers exerted by Elena's witch-friend Bonnie, Caleb makes his way to Mystic Falls to investigate. Selene is out for the blood of both Salvatore brothers, unable to determine which of the two was responsible for killing her beloved Michael in combat. Her best shot is to take out the object of both of their affections: Elena. But a run-in with Caleb proves to be a tough obstacle for Selene. At Bonnie's request, Caleb has sworn to protect Elena using his powers for as long as he can. Unbeknownst to him (and the Salvatore brothers), Selene knows a way to render the warlock powerless and bring her fellow vampires to her mercy once and for all. Tyler tries to embarrass Stefan by throwing a football at him during practice. However, Stefan's super-skills of catching a football impresses Mr. Tanner who tries to persuade Stefan to join the school's football team. Meanwhile, Elena continues to ignore the semi-psychic Bonnie's warnings that Stefan is not who he claims to be. So, Elena invites Stefan and Bonnie over for dinner at her house. She hopes that they will get know each other better, but her plan ends up backfiring.
