The action is nonstop at the Venice Beach Skate Park. The sounds of skateboards scraping and pounding concrete fill the air as skaters make their moves inside smooth bowls at the park, which stands as a monument to the rich skateboarding tradition in Venice and Santa Monica. The bowls are like the empty swimming pools where Z-Boys -- members of the local Zephyr skateboard team -- revolutionized the sport with their surfer-like moves in the 1970s.

Tillman the skateboarding bulldog from the iphone commercial. All clips are from January 2007. Tillman was a little over a year old at the time and is a much better skateboarder now. I Filmed the video using a just purchased Panasonic Lumix TZ1. I was bicycling through Venice Beach California when I came upon the skateboarding dog. This was probably the only time I used the Lumix's wide screen movie mode. I suspect one of the biggest reasons my video was selected, second only to the awesome Tillman, was not much user generated 16:9 content was available on youtube.(iphone is 16:9) Originally the first video had the soundtrack "Giving In" by linkin Park. Once the video appeared in iphone commercials I panicked and removed the video from youtube because of the attention and I had no rights to use the song. As time approached for Apple's release of the iphone with youtube, youtube contacted me and requested I reinstate the video without the soundtrack. Youtube wanted users to be able to view the skateboarding dog in the store and after purchasing their iphone. Unfortunately youtube gave me only a few hours to re-edited video before the iphone release. The original background sound on most of the clips was ruined by hysterical laughter from a woman watching Tillman so I cut and pasted sound in from other parts of the video to cover ...

Elton and Betty White were street performers along Venice beach, Ca when I shot this in 2000. Dont know where they are now but they were quite a hoot. Betty was 74 back then I believe, I bet she's someone's grandma! She sure does have some spunk for age and considering she came from a different erra. On a trip to Los Angeles last week - I went to the infamous venice beach - and saw this guy busking...slightly abusive of the crowd, he wouldn't let anyone leave or go on with his show unless he reached X amount of dollars (that he did, a few times - but, hey everyone's gotta earn a living.) His show was entertaining nonetheless - so check it out.

Nice 3 minute video of Pacific Ocean Park, aka POP. Located in Santa Monica / Venice California. This was taken from a 1959 documentary called "Where The Mountains Meet The Sea". Rides shown are Sea Serpent Roller Coaster, Sky Ride, Sea Circus, Banana Boat Ride, Midway, Double Ferris Wheels, Diving Bells, and many others in the background. POP was finally taken from us in the early 1970's to make way for, well nothing..It's just beach now. I stood where it was last summer and closed my eyes and could hear the laughter and fun that was there one time. You would not even know it was there now, except for just a few signs stating "No Swimming - Possible Underwater Obstructions".
