HARWICH — The Harwich High School senior class president is a young woman. So is the vice president, the secretary and the treasurer. So they wanted a strong woman to be the graduation speaker. Their choice: Victoria Reggie Kennedy, widow of US Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. The officers picked Kennedy early last fall as the female leader who they wanted and sent her an invitation Jan. 3. "We were never even expecting to hear back," said class president Meredith Mason yesterday. "We're really excited." Kennedy faxed in her acceptance in February after reading the officers' "compelling" invitation, she wrote. They described their pride as female class officers in a school district led by a female superintendent, Carolyn Cragin, and Polly Hemstock, chairwoman of the Harwich School Committee. It would be especially meaningful, they wrote, for the estimated 95 graduates to hear from a woman who is such an inspiration through her personal and professional accomplishments and years of public service. Before her second marriage and political career with the late Senator, Kennedy practiced law, focusing on financial institutions, for nearly two decades. She is the co-founder of the proposed Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the US Senate at a site next to the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston.
