The documentary begins with a laborer digging in the earth. He is digging what will become his sacrificial grave. Dramatically, his head is chopped off and the theme music begins for the series. A bit sensationalistic at first, we get into the archaeology of why this scene was reconstructed this way. The Shang Dynasty, once considered legend, is now archaeological fact. Dating back to nearly 3000 BC, the Shang were a powerful group of early rulers. The evidence of oracle bones, on which the earliest form of Chinese writing were written. The city of Anyang, some 300 miles from Beijing, is the site where oracle bones were first discovered in 1928. So, the Shang were not legendary or mythical after all, but a dynasty in fact. Headless skeletons were discovered, suggesting human sacrifice. Some of these sites date to 1300-1500 BC and form an essential, and repeated patter in this Bronze Age culture. Bronze vessels that were extremely intricate for these mandate of heaven rulers. Bronze casting was perfected as an art during the Shang, and many have been found. We learn about Wu Di, and his queen, who led his armies in war. She was his general, who gave great victories. Her name was Fu Hao. At Xanshingdui, there was a rival culture that vied with the Shang. Indeed, over the next eight centuries, there were numerous cultures that jockeyed for power and position in early China. The Zhou were the next dynasty, and centered at Xi'an. The following were the Warring States Period ...

He was a former officer under his uncle, Ma Teng, and later Ma Chao, the eldest son of Ma Teng and, finally, Liu Bei, founder of the Kingdom of Shu. Little of Ma Dai is known through historic records, except he at least participated Zhuge Liang's last expedition to the North in 234 AD. During that war, he was defeated by the Wei general, Niu Jin; but he was credited with hunting down Wei Yan, when the latter insisted on contiuing the northern expedition after the death of Zhuge Liang. Deng Ai (197--264)[1] was a general of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms era of China. It was said that whenever he saw a hill or wide valley, he would immediately size up the best places to store grain and position troops. An online petition is asking the Nobel committee to award this year's Nobel Peace Prize to imprisoned Chinese activist Liu Xiaobo. But Chinese authorities have been quick to oppose his nomination. Liu Xiaobo is a former literature professor now serving an eleven-year prison sentence in China, for so-called "subverting state power." Liu was imprisoned before for five years for taking part in the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests. More recently Liu was one of the principal authors of Charter '08, a petition calling on the Chinese regime to improve human rights, create an independent court system and allow multi-party democracy in China. Charter '08 was based on Charter '77, a similar petition calling for freedom in the, then communist, Czechoslovakia. One of the authors of Charter '77, Vaclav Havel wrote an open letter published in the international Herald Tribune last week calling on the Noble Committee to award Liu Xiaobo the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize. A Chinese petition has also been circulating on the Internet signed by more than 300 Chinese lawyers and other professionals, supporting Liu for this year's prize. The possibility of Liu being a candidate for the prize has been on the table for a while and the Chinese regime has been keen to oppose Liu's nomination. Norwegian media reported on Monday the director of the Nobel Institute Geir Lundestad said he had been approached by the Chinese Foreign Minister, Fu Ying, in the summer. He says Fu Ying told him awarding ...

From the album A Dream Return To Tang Dynasty (1992) Tang Dynasty (Chinese: 唐朝; pinyin: Táng Cháo) is a Chinese ethnic-art rock and prog-metal band that is often credited as being the first heavy metal band in China. Tang Dynasty rose to fame with their first major album "A Dream Return to Tang Dynasty" (1991/2). The album officially sold about 2000000 authentic copies throughout Asia and abroad, not counting the multitudes more of pirated copies. Their sound is part progressive rock and artistic metal and part traditional Chinese vocal techniques with lyrical poetry and musical arrangements meant to hearken back to the glorious days of ancient Chinese civilization; in particular, the art and cultural epitome of Chinese history as popularly represented by the era of the Tang Dynasty. Tang Dynasty soon became the icon of Chinese hard rock music, and their lightning-fast guitarist Liu Yijun (刘义军), aka "Lao Wu", became the first rock guitar hero in China. However, tragedy cast a dark shadow over the band in 1995 with the untimely death on May 11 of bassist Zhang Ju, who was riding his motorcycle from fellow rock bassist friend Chen Jin's home, when an accident occurred involving a collision with a truck on the Zizhuqiao (Purple Bamboo Bridge) freeway overpass in western Beijing. This dealt a heavy blow to the band. Liu Yijun left the band in 1996 and was replaced by original founding member Kaiser Kuo, a Chinese-American who formed the band with Ding Wu and Zhang Ju in ...

The flamethrower was carefully documented and illustrated in the Chinese military manual known as the Wujing Zongyao, compiled in the year 1044 AD during the Song Dynasty. Among various descriptions of equipment and components of the device, the book also provided instructions for how to keep up maintenance and repair of double-piston flamethrowers.

Russian Siberia was part of the Mongol Empire. The Huns were not Turks. Rather the Mongols as well as the Turks are descended from the Huns. Koreans are not related to the Mongols. Once the summer residence of the Chinese Qing Emperor, Chengde is full of historical significance. Construction of the spacious and exquisite palace lasted almost throughout the 18th century. In 1792, this architectural masterpiece was finally completed and in addition to this spacious building, several monasteries and temples were also built, the Eight Outer Temples. Pule Si, 'The Temple of Universal Joy', is situated in the middle of the sanctuaries' Eastern section. The 'Eight Outer Temples' symbolize various Chinese ethnic groups. Those who were loyal to the emperor were duly honored within this temple area. Thus, numerous characteristic, cultural and traditional elements of various of the country's regions were incorporated into both art and architecture. The 'Temple of Universal Joy', Pule Si, and the relatively remote sanctuary of Shuxiang Si, respectively represent the North and South of the Chinese Empire. The main administrative building within the Pule Si Temple is the circular Pavilion Of The Dawn, Xuguang Ge and is a replica of the Heaven Temple in Beijing Washing Bat Hill, to which there is a chair lift, is close to the settlement. The architecture of the Heaven Altar in Beijing was studied extensively several years before construction of the Pule Si Temple. In 1749, Emperor Qianlong ordered that the temple be extended. In Chengde, profound symbolism was also important. The location, extension and decoration of the buildings were designed to create a perfect ...
The temple monastery of Xumi-Fushou-Miao is one of the most impressive buildings in Chengde, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overall, there are eight 'outer-temple-monasteries', each of them with its own architectural style. The temple was built in 1780 to mark the visit to China of a senior Tibetan religious dignitary, the sixth Panchen Lama, the first in history to visit China. It is a replica of what was his own monastery in Tibet. The construction of this monastery played an important role in the diplomatic relationship between the Chinese Emperor, Quing Long, and Tibet. The multi-level roofs of Xumi-Fushou-Miao are of the highest aesthetic and artistic finesse. Numerous enchanting ornaments adorn the splendid roofs of these captivating temples. A total of eight gold-plated dragons grace the ridges and further roofs are decorated with traditional Tibetan portrayals of animals, such as elephants and a variety of mythical beasts. Xumi-Fushou-Miao monastery is an impressive example of late 18th century Chinese architecture.

A dignified pavilion rises behind the main entrance of the magnificent Ming Necropolis, which is located 50km northwest of Beijing. Seven kilometres long, the holy avenue, 'Spirit Way', of the Ming Necropolis is lined with numerous beautiful stone figures. Dingling, the mausoleum of the 13th Ming Emperor, Wanli, is one of three restored grave sites where elegant stairs, decorated with beautiful stone masonry, lead up to the terrestrial section of the mausoleum. According to ancient Chinese tradition, an earthly section had to be built for the soul of the dead, in which the soul would be comforted. For this reason, the magnificent buildings and great halls were designed in the style of the emperor's palace. The expenditure for the royal funerals was without limit and it took almost six years and around 30000 workers to build the grave complex for Emperor Wanli. Changling is the largest mausoleum of the Necropolis and was built for Emperor Yongle, who reigned during the beginning of the 15th century. But this extremely well restored grave site has a darker side to it. Together with the Emperor, it is believed that 30 living concubines were buried in this grave.

The Centuries of China
Guangzhou, the South Gate of China, is a prosperous metropolis full of vigor. Guangzhou is the capital city of Guangdong, and the center of its political, economic, scientific, educational and cultural life. Sui (Ears of Rice) is short for Guangzhou and the City of Ram (Yang Cheng) is also an alias of Guangzhou. The kapok is the city flower and the kapok tree is the city tree of Guangzhou. Guangzhou is located in the middle south of Guangdong Province, north of the Pearl River Delta. It lies close to the South China Sea, Hong Kong, and Macau. Zhujiang (The Pearl River), the third largest river of China, runs through Guangzhou and is navigable to the South China Sea. Situated in such an excellent geographical region, Guangzhou is called China's South Gate. Covering an area of 7434.4 square kilometers (2870 square miles), Guangzhou is home to more than 11 million people, including a 3.7 million transitory population. With the opening of China to the outside world, a large number of people from other regions of China swarmed into Guangzhou, one of the first 'open' cities in China. This has accelerated its economic development. Guangzhou is a famous historical city. In ancient days, Guangzhou was the capital city for three Chinese dynasties: the Nan Yue (South Yue), the Nan Han (South Han) and the Nanming (South Ming). Thus it was put in the list of the 24 most famous historical cultural cities and became a tourist destination. You can not understand most Chinese cities ...
The pipa (Chinese: 琵琶; pinyin: pípá) is a plucked Chinese string instrument. Sometimes called the Chinese lute, the instrument has a pear-shaped wooden body. It has been played for nearly two thousand years of history in China, and belongs to the plucked category of instruments (弹拨乐器/彈撥樂器). Several related instruments in East and Southeast Asia are derived from the pipa; these include the Japanesebiwa, the Vietnameseđàn tỳ bà, and the Koreanbipa. Prototypes of the pipa already existed in China in the Qin Dynasty (221 BC - 206 BC). At that time, there were two types of pipa. One was straight-necked, with a round sound box, and two faces mounted with leather. The other was believed to be inspired by the primitive forms of zheng, konghou, and zou. It also has a straight neck, a round sound box, and also four strings, along with twelve standards of notes. This model was later developed into the instrument known today as the ruan. The modern pipa is closer to the instrument which originated in Persia/Middle-East (where it was called barbat) and was introduced into China beginning in the late Jin Dynasty (265-420 AD). By the Tang era, the pipa had become popular in the imperial court. It had a crooked neck, 4 or 5 silk strings, and 5 or 6 frets, and was played with a plectrum in a horizontal position. As the ages went by, the crooked neck was replaced by a straight one, the number of frets increased to between 14 or 16, and to 17, 24, 29, or 30 in the 20th century ...
