For two people-navigator Michael Parson and a woman Army interpreter, Sergeant Gold-a battle for survival begins across some of the most forbidding terrain on earth against not only the hazards of nature but the treacheries of man: the Taliban stalking them; the villagers, whose loyalty is unknown; and a prisoner who would very much like the three of them to be caught. All Parson and Gold have is each other, to stay alive. An extraordinary debut novel about courage and survival in Afghanistan, written as only a man who has "been there and done that" could tell it. The author of two previous non-fiction books (The Unmaking of Americans and Our Oldest Enemy), John J. Miller has worked for The New Republic and National Review (he has also contributed to Reason). Now he has published a novel, The First Assassin, which bestselling author Vince Flynn has said is "like Day of the Jackal set in 1861 Washington." Rich in historical detail, the story takes place as "a new president takes office, a nation begins to break apart—and Colonel Charles Rook must risk insubordination to stop a mysterious assassin who prowls a nervous city. He will need the help of an ally he does not even know he has: Portia, a beautiful slave who holds a vital clue, hundreds of miles away." Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie recently sat down with Miller to talk about contemporary politics, his novel, and his decision to publish the book via Amazon's createspace program, which represents a new step in self-publishing. Filmed by Dan Hayes and Meredith Bragg; edited by Hayes. Approximately 8 minutes. For downloadable versions of this and other Reason videos, go to reason.tv

tinyurl.com The Overton window is a concept in political theory, named after its originator, Joe Overton, former vice president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. It describes a window in the range of public reactions to ideas in public discourse, in a spectrum of all possible options on an issue. Overton described a method for moving that window, thereby including previously excluded ideas, while excluding previously acceptable ideas. The technique relies on people promoting ideas even less acceptable than the previous outer fringe ideas. That makes those old fringe ideas look less extreme, and thereby acceptable. The idea is that priming the public with fringe ideas intended to be and remain unacceptable, will make the real target ideas seem more acceptable by comparison.

House of Ghosts is a gripping mystery novel that takes readers through some of the most shrouded history of the twentieth century. In August 1944, Allied forces launched a top-secret aerial assault on the IG Farben oil and rubber plant, the flight plan taking bombers directly over the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp five miles away. Considering the known threat to the Jewish population, why did Allies bypass Hitler s most notorious extermination camp without once trying to knock out the gas chambers or railways? At the estate sale of the late Preston Swedge, an alcoholic recluse and World War II veteran, a diary including details of that 1944 aerial assault is found by retired detective Joe Henderson, which includes descriptions of a rogue attempt by a Jewish-American pilot, Paul Rothstein, to drop bombs on Auschwitz. What follows is Henderson s determined search for the truth about the failed attempt to save 300000 Jews.
