High school students are participating in a virtual field trip and hands-on lesson courtesy of the Faculty of Medicine and computer technology. Biology students in Cochrane, Alberta are being taught about the human brain, using the actual specimen, without leaving their classroom via video conferencing. High school students have been coming to the Faculty of Medicine to learn about human anatomy for five years. But in order to do that they have to physically be on site. Dr. John Bertram, the anatomy teaching co-ordinator at the faculty, is hoping by reaching out through video conference more students, especially outside of urban centres, will have the opportunity to take part. The financial crisis for the Wichita School District now has PETA getting involved as the organization is trying to convince the school district to stop dissecting frogs in class. In exchange, the animal rights group would give the district a virtual alternative. Instead of dissecting an animal in class, the computer program does the same thing using virtual technology. PETA wants to give Wichita schools the software for free. But the gift comes with a catch...."If Wichita schools will agree to no longer offer cutting up animals to students, said Justin Goodman with PETA. PETA says the move has already saved other school districts in the nation thousands of dollars. "Schools receive much-needed funding and students will be taught using the most modern and effective teaching tools, Goodman said. They are considering the offer, but Board President Barb Fuller says something like that does create more questions: We'd have to think of training the staff and how that would work with our curriculum and our standards that we are currently teaching, she said. Its just not something we take our hand out and say, Oh yeah, that's great, thank you. The clips are from Granada's 'The Program' presented by Tony Wilson as featured on the December 1995 Personal Computer World cover disc. From them you can see what the PC and Mac industy was like some 15+ years ago. If you'd like a copy of the interactive CD, or have information on the TV show the disc was made from I'd love to hear from you! Video from Cat Lewis and Dan O'Brian helping you get on the Internet featuring technology like 486 and Pentium PCs, 14.4 and V34 28.8 modems, Internet Guides, and Netscape Navigator. She talks about providers and bulletin board systems like U-NET, Demon Internet, Delphi Internet, CompuServe, Apple eWorld and Microsoft Network. Continuing with explaining how e-mail is used and describing how the internet was originally invented in the 60's by the US military to maintain contact in the event of a nuclear war and is a worldwide electronic communication system that spans all continents with 20 million people communicating through their computers and can not be stopped by any one country as if a link is down it finds another way to send your message. Eva Pascoe (of Cyberia Cyber Cafés) then shows you some interesting things to do on the world wide web such as virtual frog dissection, eric cantona, netiquette, rencontres dating and the cyrano server for composing automated messages.

At Ohio State, medical professors are creating training tools for the Nintendo generation of surgeons. Dr. Gregory Wiet and the Ohio Supercomputer Center have been working on a project known as the Validation Dissemination of Temporal Bone Dissection that simulates surgery through computer visualization, applied force, and even changes in sound. This technology allows for direct consequences to action and gives students opportunities to experience real world problems. www.wosu.org...

Unfortunately, the most recent trend in German, penal law suggests pursuing »deals« to speed up trials, helping courts to manage their workload by means of cutting back on retrieving, surveying and analyzing exhibits, interviewing witnesses and affording experts to verify and comment on findings.
