In Fall 2006, first-year students at Harvey Mudd College mentored fifth and sixth grade students at Vista del Valle Elementary School and other Claremont schools in science, mathematics, and writing. Our collaboration provides a hands-on, experimental science project aligned to the grade five California state mathematics and science content standards for every elementary school student. Specifically, we are measuring lead in soil from vehicle emissions throughout Claremont. Harvey Mudd students reflect on the science, engineering, and social demands that brought tetraethyl lead to the market as a gasoline additive for over sixty years. This project exemplifies the Harvey Mudd College Mission Statement and is made possible by funding from the National Science Foundation, the Ludwick Family Foundation, the Camille & Henry Dreyfus Foundation, and Harvey Mudd College. Preceptors: Matt Borok '09, Jennifer Fukuto '09, Greg Herschler '09, Ginna Kim '09, Kacy McKibben '09, Glennis Rayermann '09.

The letter from Minnesota came as a surprise to Army private Ben Sackett, 21, a Roseville native stationed in Iraq. Dear soldier, it began, Hi, my name is Katie. Im in the sixth grade and go to Vista View in Burnrsville. Im 11 years old and I love animals. The letter, from Burnsville sixth grader Katie Mischel, was dated Oct. 1. On Nov. 11 Veterans Day Private Sackett surprised Katie, showing up at a ceremony at her school to meet his pen pal in person. Private Sackett brought along the letter, which Katie read aloud at the assembly. I hope you dont mind me asking some questions about your life in Iraq, Katie wrote. What is your day like? Is there any food you really miss? Back here in Minnesota, its starting to cool off, a big reminder that fall is coming and winter is right behind. Sixth grade teacher Sharon Stalock organized the dear-soldier letter campaign, which Katie explained in her letter. The whole sixth grade is doing this as a project, Katie wrote, to write letters to soldiers in Iraq. If you ask me, I like the project. Katie asked but one thing of Private Sackett to keep an eye out for her cousin. If you meet my cousin, who is in the Marines, his name is Adam, Katie wrote. Private Sackett presented to Vista View Principal Susan Risius and student Siri Jordan the American flag that flew over where he was stationed in Iraq. Siris father, Dan, is stationed there now, but she was surprised by a visit from him in October. Vista View parent Becky Shoop, a veteran ...

What, no state reptile? Students in Mr. Jay Baichi's class at Skyline Vista Elementary School could not believe that Colorado has no state reptile. So they researched and selected the most appropriate reptile to represent Colorado, the Western Painted Turtle. The next step? Find a legislator to carry the bill. Who better than former District 50 educator and now House Representative Cherylin Peniston. Representative Peniston has requested that this be her first bill. Once the bill passes the House vote, it is hopeful that Senator Jennifer Viega, the Senator for School District 50's area, will carry the bill in the Senate. Skyline Vista students are prepared to testify in the House and if necessary, the Senate. It looks like their testifying talents will be called upon around the third week of January.

The Storybridge Program was developed in 1993 by Stagebridge, the oldest senior theater company in the nation. The program uses storytelling as a tool for improving students' language arts skills and bringing elders and youth together. "Language development and performing arts are essential elements to the curriculum taught at the elementary school level," said Rose Woo, teacher, Bella Vista Elementary School in Oakland. "The programs that they offer schools are invaluable." Stagebridge recently completed a three-year implementation grant from the US Department of Education's Arts in Education Model Development & Dissemination Program. The results of a two-year independent evaluation of the program by 3D Group were released in 2007. The 3D Group evaluation concluded that "Storybridge students significantly outperformed control students in three areas of listening comprehension." After participating in the program, students were able to recall more elements of a story when retelling it, understood the structure of a story and could recall richer details, the report stated. "It's something that children will remember for the rest of their lives," said Deitra Atkins, principal, Glenview Elementary School in Oakland.
