At the Virginia Military Institute, the incoming cadets of every year begin the year without the title of "VMI Cadet" and without the proper title of their class. They begin as "Rats" with the designation "+3" added onto the end of their Dykes' class, their 1st classmen mentors. From day one until usually around late January, a Rat Mass will endure what is called the "Ratline" in which many challenges are set forth for the new cadets. They must learn the system, master its ways, and secure a place of honor for themselves within the walls of barracks. When the 1st Class decides the Rats are ready to "Breakout" of the Ratline, the Rats are put through a rigorous week of physical and mental challenges, leading up to Breakout Day. This is the Rat Mass of 2011+3 breaking out of the Ratline on 22 January 2011. By the end of the day, after much tough endurance and teamwork, they earned the title of "VMI Cadet" as well as their official class title of the VMI Class of 2014. The majority of their Breakout occurred at the New Market Battlefield, where the VMI Corps of Cadets fought in pitched battle on 15 May 1864 against Union forces, ultimately turning the tide of the battle by charging the field as one. Parents, your sons and daughters are now young men and women; on the path to leading a life of honor, selfless service, and courage. What they did was not easy. 0500, VMI Barracks, 30 January 2010. This was the wake up that the Rat Mass of 2010 + 3 (now Class of 2013) received on their Breakout Day. We had M14s and M16s firing blanks, along with VMI's cadet artillery piece "Little John" firing volleys in each barracks, kicked off by a recording of George C. Scott's version of General George S. Patton's speech to his 3rd Army. General Patton spent a year at VMI and even though he is not a graduate he is still remembered for his time in barracks. Rat's start their journey at VMI not as Cadets with their own class, but as "Rats" in a Rat mass. The Rat mass does not have its own class distinction, it bears the name of its Dyke's class with three years added on (for example, the Rat Mass of 2010 + 3). Rats do not have the title of "Cadet" or their own class until the 1st Class (seniors) decide that the Rat mass is ready to "breakout" of the Ratline. This usually occurs at the end of January but it is not a guaranteed time frame. Breakout Day consists of a whole day of constant physical activity and struggle. It is the last day that the Rats have to bond and unite as a class to survive the day. This is a video showing an assortment of videos and photographs from the 2008-2009 academic year. This video was made to show the path taken during a Cadet's first year at the Virginia Military Institute, known as Rat Year. Upon entering the Institute, "new cadets" are referred to as "Rats." The title of Cadet is earned upon completion of the Ratline -the challenging and demanding indoctrination period every applicant must complete. When the administration, upper classes, cadre, and the 1st classmen (seniors) decide the "Rat Mass" is worthy enough to "breakout" of the Ratline, the Rats then go through Breakout Day. Breakout Day can be compared with "Recognition Day" for the Service Academies, but involves a full day of constant physical activity, culminating in the upper-class recognition of the Rats as Cadets.
