Vestmannaeyjar (English: The Westman Islands) is a small archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. The largest island, Heimaey, has a population of 4036. The other islands are uninhabited, though two have single hunting cabins. The archipelago came to international attention in 1973 when Icelanders battled to prevent lava from the volcano Eldfell blocking Heimaey's harbour. The 1973 Icelandic eruption caused a major crisis for the island and nearly led to its permanent evacuation. Volcanic ash fell over most of the island, destroying many houses, and a lava flow threatened to close off the harbour, the island's main income source via its fishing fleet. An operation was mounted to cool the advancing lava flow by pumping sea water onto it, which was successful in preventing the loss of the harbour. After the eruption finished, the islanders used heat from the slowly cooling lava flows to provide hot water and to generate electricity. They also used some of the extensive tephra, fall-out of airborne volcanic material, to extend the runway at the island's small airport, and as landfill, on which 200 new houses were built. The eruption also formed Eldfell, a composite volcanic cone just over 200 metres (660 ft) high on the Icelandic island of Heimaey. It formed just outside the town of Heimaey on 23 January1973 and its name means Mountain of Fire in Icelandic.

www.mateja.se From teldinn www.youtube.com Video made by the Icelandic coast guard of the volcano eruption near Eyjafjallajökull glacier, in South Iceland. The eruption started shortly before midnight on Saturday 20th of March 2010. A volcano in the area of the Eyjafallajoekull glacier in southern Iceland erupted overnight for the first time in 189 years, forcing more than 500 people to evacuate their homes. The eruption took place just before midnight in the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, the fifth largest glacier in Iceland. The volcano, which is 1666m high and has a crater 4km in diameter, is covered by a large ice cap. Authorities evacuated 400 people in an area southeast of the capital, Reykjavik, amid fears of flooding from the glacier melt. Three Red Cross centres were opened in nearby villages to look after evacuees. "We estimate that no one is in danger in the area but we have started an evacuation plan and between 500 and 600 people are being evacuated" said Sigurgeir Gudmundsson of the Icelandic civil protections department. A state of emergency has been declared in communities near the 100 square mile glacier, however no damage or casualties have been reported so far. We do not at this moment know the full extent of the eruption but a team is flying over the site now to evaluate the situation, said said Vidir Reynisson, the department manager for the Icelandic Civil Protection Department The Icelandic public radio station RUV reported that three Iceland-bound ...
www.timesofearth.com REYKJAVIK - Authorities in southern Iceland have moved hundreds of people from the area around an errupting volcano. The evacuation in the early hours of Sunday follows the eruption of a volcano beside the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, the fifth largest in Iceland. A state of emergency was been declared in communities near the 160km glacier, with 450 people moved from an area southeast of Reykjavik, the capital. No damage or injuries were immediately reported. Authorities had initially feared that the eruption was below the glacier and could cause flooding. But scientists conducting an aerial survey of the are later said the eruption had not occurred below the ice, lessening the chances of flooding from glacier melt. "This is the best possible place for an eruption, as the area is not covered by ice," Tumi Gudumundsson, a geologist at the University of Iceland, said in an interview with the national broadcaster, RUV. Three Red Cross centres were set up for evacuees in the village of Hella. All domestic flights have been cancelled until further notice, the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reported, and and other aircraft have been ordered to stay away from the area of the volcano. Some more exceptional film material from Gerhard Skrobek and Hermann Luschner. The video shows partial destruction und evacuation of the Vestmannaeyjar island Heimaey. It also shows the rapid growth of Eldfell volcano during the first days of the eruption. Unfortunately the super8 material is in a bad condition, so that it was impossible to post the video in a higher quality. However I think that this documentary is worth watching!
In the night of 23.January 1973 a tree kilometer long fissure opend on Heimaey island, witch belongs to the Vestmannaeyjar islands (Icland). The eruption not only caused evacuation of the island, it also destroyed almost the whole town of Heimaey. The to volcano filmmakers Hermann Luschner and Gerhard Skrobek succeeded to visit the island for some days during the first week of the eruption. This is part of their (digitaliced) super8 material, that was broadcasted in news and documantaions all over the world.

The biggest outdoor party of the year is annually held in the Vestman Islands, on the south coast of Iceland. Nearly 20.000 people converge on Heimaey, the largest of the these volcanic islands. Heimaey is sometimes called the Pompey of the North because of the volcanic eruption in the island in 1973. This year, the Þjóðhátið as it is called, was one of the most successful in history. Weather was great and spirits were high. Make sure you be there next year, the first weekend in August. Check out www.nightlifefriend.is Thanks to www.superman.is

A fascinating extract from the ITV documentary "Savage Earth" first broadcast in the 1990s. Surtsey was the island born from an underwater volcanic eruption off the south coast of Iceland in 1963. Haemay was the small town on the Westmann islands, south of Iceland, which was awoken one night in 1973 to find its volcano had burst into life. The townsfolk fought the advancing lava with high pressure hoses and managed to turn it away from their harbour. Fascinating shots of the eruption.
