The Volvo Olympian is the direct successor to the popular Leyland Olympian, after the company was acquired by Volvo. While from exterior it seems to be a mere badge change, the engine was switched to a Volvo TD102KF, and more notably the dashboard was standardized along with other Volvo models. 671 of 3-axle Volvo Olympians were introduced in three batches. The video shows one of the first batch Olympian in action. On top of this, there were also 100 2-axle Volvo Olympian that were non air-conditioned. Volvo's new hybrid bus is now carrying passengers for the first time in Göteborg, Sweden with The Göteborgs Spårvägar transit company participating in a field test. The hybrid bus provides major fuel savings as a result of electric drive and shutting off the diesel engine at bus stops. Volvo expects to start series production of hybrid buses at the beginning of 2010. The company has already received its first orders for the bus, including customers in Luxemburg and Switzerland.
