CAIR Launches 2012 'Muslims Vote' Campaign (WASHINGTON, DC, 12/20/2011) -- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today launched its 2012 "Muslims Vote" campaign designed to empower American Muslims by increasing their political capacity and presence. CAIR's initiative --- launched two weeks before the January 3 Iowa Caucus -- includes a 2012 presidential voter guide, an online voter registration tool, a video promoting online voter registration, and the Twitter hashtag "#MuslimsVote." CAIR has also mailed all presidential candidates its 2012 election questionnaire. The Washington-based Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization's non-partisan voter campaign will focus on ensuring that American Muslims actively participate in the 2012 election cycle by volunteering in election campaigns, registering to vote, hosting candidate forums, and by mobilizing other community members through "get out the vote" initiatives. CAIR will also pay special attention to Muslim voters under the age of 30 who -- like all Americans of that age -- are under-represented on voter rolls. "We're calling on all American Muslims to fulfill their civic responsibility by doing their part in the upcoming presidential election," said CAIR Government Affairs Coordinator Robert McCaw. "We are committed to making sure our community's voice is heard in this critical election cycle." "With large concentrations of Muslim voters in key swing states -- such as Ohio, Florida, Virginia, and Michigan ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: 22 November 2010 -- UNMIS: Sudan -- The Chairman of the United Nations (UN) panel tasked with monitoring the Referenda in Sudan has expressed concern in low numbers of voter registrations in the northern part of the country for a southern Sudan referendum expected to take place starting 9 January 2011, saying that it hopes that the numbers can be stepped up; speaking on Monday after meeting with Sudan's Second Vide President Osman Ali Taha, the Chairperson of the Panel on the Referenda in Sudan, Benjamin Mkapa said many Southern Sudanese appeared to be uninterested or unwilling to register due to multiple reasons including the lack of a public information campaign about the process. Voter registration began on 15 November at nearly 3000 sites across Sudan for the referendum scheduled for 9 January next year on whether southern Sudan should secede from the rest of the country or remain united with it. Speaking later at a press conference Mkapa said that another reason for concern was the uncertain future status of southerner's living in the North. He said it was important for the public to feel secure enough to turn out to register and vote without a fear of any repercussion. In reference to the Abyei referendum, he reiterated that the referendum commission was yet to be established and relations between the Miseriya and Dinka tribes living in the Abyei area remained tense. This was the Panel's second visit to Sudan. They visited nine voter registration ...

MaximsNewsNetwork: 01 November 2010 -- UNMIS: Sudan -- In Sudan, voter registration for the referendum is due to start on the 15 November and will run for 17 days across northern and southern states of Sudan; the United Nations MaximsNewsNetwork: SOUTHERN SUDAN REFERENDUM COMMISSION - VOTER REGISTRATION (UNMIS)(UN) Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) is providing advisory and logistical support to the commission and the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission receives kits, books and other supporting materials required to conduct voter registration ahead of Sudan's self-determination referendum early next year. The international community officially handed over voter registration kits, registration training books and other materials to Sudanese referendum authorities in both Juba and Khartoum other the weekend. In Juba, the United Nations (UN) Integrated Referendum and Electoral Division (UNIRED) formally presented the materials to the Referendum Bureau's chairperson Justice Chan Reec Madut. Training of SSRC staff who will register eligible voters started on 26 October. An estimated 8000 will be trained in the south and 2000 in the north. The training will conclude on 5 November. The chairperson expressed his thanks to the UN and the international community for what he called the indispensable support they have given to the referendum process in Southern Sudan thus far. "CNN is reporting that Southern Sudan residents will begin registering to vote November 14th for an historic referendum that will decide whether the region will remain part of the country or break off to form a new nation. Southern Sudanese who live outside the country will also have the chance to vote in select countries in Africa and the West. Another referendum regarding Abyei, a disputed oil-rich region between the North and the South, will also take place to determine whether or not the region will gain governmental autonomy. The two sides of the region are divided over which tribes should be allowed to vote in the Abyei referendum. The South is attempting to block the Messiria, a nomadic Arabic tribe, from voting, saying that only the permanently-based Dinka tribe has the right to vote. The Messiria tribe has threatened war if its members are barred from voting."
Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, urges Churches to offer voter registration to their people. He quotes the Bishops Conference as well as the IRS with proof that this is permissible, under both Church law and civil law, for Churches to do. Yet fear often makes good opportunities go up in flames, as Fr. Pavone demonstrates somewhat dramatically in this video.
The manual voter registration exercise has come to a close. The exercise, which had been extended by four days, is projected to have netted close to 12 million voters. But as Brenda Mulinya reports, the electronic registration will go on for two more weeks.
The national manual voter registration exercise that was to end on Wednesday has been extended by 4 days to Sunday, the 9th May. The Interim Independent Electoral Commission says the move was due to public demand, and a need to give more Kenyans an opportunity to participate in the forthcoming constitution. And as all this took place, all is set for the official publication of the proposed new constitution on Thursday by the Attorney General in a function that will also be attended by President Mwai Kibaki at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. Francis Gachuri reports.
www.ntv.co.ke The interim independent electoral commission extended the period on Wednesday evening citing pleas from voters. The commission says the exercise will now close on Sunday, by which time it hopes to have registered 1.5 million new voters. But as NTVs Peninah Karibe reports, those new numbers will not come cheap.
Voter registration has taken off to a sluggish start as the Electoral Commission kicks off the last phase of registration exercise. Biometric equipment will be used in the month long exercise that is expected to raise the voters register in the run up to the general election next year. Our roving camera has been out checking on progress made in voter registration so far.
The IIEC has finally surpassed its target of registering 10 million people, just two days before the curtain falls on the registration exercise. The target was reached today as Kenyans rushed to beat the Wednesday deadline for the exercise that was earlier marred by what the commission calls voter apathy. And as Sylvia Chebet reports, the major culprits of the voter apathy were apparently women.
Countdown to the publication of the draft constitution. With only three days to go before the document is unveiled, the committee of experts is re-mobilizing for a massive civic education programme, following weeks of disinformation. Voter registration went on throughout the country today, as Kenyans rush to beat the Wednesday deadline.
PRESIDENT KIBAKI HAS NOT THREATENED TO SACK MINISTERS OPPOSED TO THE DRAFT CONSTITUTION President Mwai Kibaki has not threatened to sack any member of cabinet opposed to the draft constitution, Government Spokesman Dr. Alfred Mutua has said. Dr. Mutua said contrary to reports appearing in sections of the press this week, President Kibaki is keen to ensure that all Kenyans including members of the cabinet and parliament take stands of their preference and express their views and opinion without being cajoled to support the governments position on the proposed constitution. Dr. Mutua described the media reports as malicious, false and intended to paint the president in bad light. Meanwhile the government has indicated that there will be no public holiday tomorrow April 30 to enable Kenyans to register as voters as some members of public sought to find out from his office. The Government Spokesperson said the voter registration exercise was rolling out well and urged Kenyans who have not registered to do so. He spoke during the weekly government press briefing at his offices in Nairobi. Office of Public Communications
