Rio de Janeiro has won the contest to host the 2016 Olympics and take the games to South America for the first time after the shock elimination of Chicago in the first round of voting today. There were celebrations on the streets of the city this evening after the announcement by the IOC president Jacques Rogge. Chicago's early exit was seen as a snub for Barack Obama, who flew to Copenhagen to represent his former home town. Obama, the first serving US president to appear before the IOC, told delegates he hoped that the games would show "America at its best is open to the world". Michelle Obama arrived two days earlier, alongside other dignitaries including the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and King Juan Carlos of Spain. Today's 45 minute presentations were the end of a three-year journey for the bidding cities. Tokyo was knocked out in the second round of voting before the IOC voted again to decide between Rio and Madrid. Madrid's surprising success in reaching the final round came after the former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch made an unusual appeal for the Spanish capital, reminding the IOC members as he asked for their vote that at age 89 "I am very near the end of my time." The Brazilian president told delegates that Rio's bid was made on behalf of the whole of South America. "I honestly think it is Brazil's turn," he said. "It is South America's bid. This is a continent that has never held the games. It is time to address this imbalance. It ...

After a VERY Long wait, I have finished Sonic Idol. I actually finished it before the spore creature creator vids and My Pets (Version 2), but decided to hold off posting it and waiting for a little while, and now am uploading it. I started this is February 2008 and then procrastinated and stopped posting videos for a long time. I recently decided to finish it off and a lot of my audio/recording files I was planning to use were corrupted and I had to track back and restart at that point and then I finally finished. A lot of the songs I originally intended for the characters were changed. Sonic Idol is a competition I made of sonic characters singing and the audience (you guys) voting for the winner. Try to think of your favorite song and the best fit song for character. This includes most of Sonic's pals and himself. I intended on making this a small series comprised of 3-4 videos but I did not have much enthusiasm later and decided to cut it down to this and also the results. What if we all cared enough to vote? Not just 54% of us, but 100% of us? What if we cared as much on Nov. 5th as we care on Nov. 4th? What if we cared all of the time the way we care some of the time? What if we cared when it was inconvenient as much as we care when its convenient? Would your community be a better place? John Mccain voted against the Veterans' GI bill sponsored by Jim Webb. Why does John Mccain hate our troops? --------------------------------------- Today, three-quarters of the Senate voted to support a new GI Bill for the troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Following the 256-166 victory in the House last week, the GI Bill has achieved almost unparalleled momentum. A number of Senators actually changed their NO votes to AYE, as it became clear that this vote was going to be a landslide: 75-22. These 75 Senators stood with Senators Jim Webb and Chuck Hagel in favor of a new bipartisan GI Bill that actually covers the cost of college. As these Senators return home to honor troops and veterans during the Memorial Day recess, they can proudly point to their vote this week as proof of their commitment to our troops. IAVA thanks each and every one of them. For the 22 Senators opposing this crucial legislation, I can only express my disappointment. For them, partisanship came before patriotism. (Three Senators were not present for the voting, including Senator Kennedy, who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor, and Senator McCain, who was at a fundraising event in California.) This was truly a historic vote, and the numbers give me tremendous confidence for the future of the GI Bill. We had a little debate at IAVA HQ about whether to call the margin "powerful" or "overwhelming" - but the real adjective is this: VETO-PROOF. The President has threatened on multiple ...

UPDATED 12/24 Dec.22.06 **TO GO OR NOT TO GO** At last check Rory Fitzpatrick was 2nd in all-star voting among Western Conference defencemen, meaning if the voting ended today, Rory would be headed to Dallas. That is, if he wanted to. And let me tell you, he has pretty much decided he will go if he gets voted in. There is no question this whole situation is going to be the subject of great debate over the next week or so. Half the people I talk to say he should go, while the other half are dead set against it. Now I can see both sides of the story, but I say, what the hell, go for it. First off, it's a great story. Rory is a 6th defenceman with no points who wouldn't have been the 100th person on the all-star ballot and yet enough people have given him the write-in votes to vault ahead of the likes of Chris Pronger and Nik Lidstrom. So what if the "Vote For Rory" campaign started out as a lark. It's caught fire and people are having a blast trying to get him into the game. Secondly, don't give me any crap about making a mockery out of the game. Who really cares about the NHL all-star game anyway? It doesn't mean anything. Most of the players that play in it would rather be in Hawaii for the break. And I'm not buying the argument that it's taking away a spot from someone who truly deserves to be there. All the defencemen that are obvious choices will be chosen. So Rory is going to go ahead of one guy from a pool of about 10. If it came down to just the voting and Rory got ...
