Michio Kaku (Host of Science Fantastic on the Talk Radio Network) speaking about the many contributions of the Voyager Space Probes and on some of the fears that are associated with them. The twin Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft continue exploring where nothing from Earth has flown before. In the 33rd year after their 1977 launches, they each are much farther away from Earth and the Sun than Pluto. Voyager 1 and 2 are now in the "Heliosheath" - the outermost layer of the heliosphere where the solar wind is slowed by the pressure of interstellar gas. Both spacecraft are still sending scientific information about their surroundings through the Deep Space Network (DSN). The primary mission was the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. After making a string of discoveries there -- such as active volcanoes on Jupiter's moon Io and intricacies of Saturn's rings -- the mission was extended. Voyager 2 went on to explore Uranus and Neptune, and is still the only spacecraft to have visited those outer planets. The adventurers' current mission, the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM), will explore the outermost edge of the Sun's domain. And beyond. As Voyager is traveling at warp, an anomaly forces Voyager to drop to impulse near a Quantum Singularity's event horizon. Sensors detect a ship nearing the event horizon & Captain Janeway tries to hail them. Receiving no response, Janeway orders the tractor beam be used to pull the ship away from the event horizon. The attempt damages Voyager & it is decided help will be sought out on near-by worlds. However, after several attempts to navigate away from the quantum singularity lead the crew back towards the stranded ship, a startling discovery is made. Paris and Kim enter a race that symbolises a peace treaty between four warring races. Meanwhile, B'Elanna fears that she and Tom aren't meant to be together.
Seven of Nine is led to a place known as Unimatrix Zero; a place where Borg drones are individuals for a short period of time during their regeneration. However, once their regeneration is complete, all recollection of the event is erased. Captain Janeway uses this to form a plan of attack that would create a mutiny from within the Collective.
In 1977, NASA launched two small spacecraft called Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. Weighing only 800 kgs each, they collected a wealth of scientific data and thousands of photographs of the four giant planets in our Solar System. After visiting Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 1's trajectory left the ecliptic plane in order to photograph Saturn's moon Titan. This meant that Voyager 1 would not visit any other planets. However, Voyager 2 continued on to visit Uranus and Neptune. Still today, Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited these two "ice giants" and their moons. The Voyager programme consisted of a pair of unmanned scientific probes, Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. They were launched in 1977 to take advantage of a favourable planetary alignment. Although they were officially designated to study just Jupiter and Saturn, the two probes were able to continue their mission into the outer Solar System. These probes were built at JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab) and were funded by NASA. The Voyager probes were originally conceived as part of the Mariner program, and designated Mariner 11 and Mariner 12, respectively. They were then moved into a separate programme named Mariner Jupiter-Saturn, later retitled Voyager because it was more appealing and romantic. Voyager is a scaled-back version of the Grand Tour programme of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Grand Tour's plan was to send a pair of probes to fly by all the outer planets; scaled back because of budget cuts. However, in the end, Voyager fulfilled all the Grand Tour flyby objectives except for Pluto, which at the time was considered a planet by the IAU. In the 1990s, Voyager 1 overtook the slower travelling Pioneer 10 to become the most distant human made artifact in space. Voyager 1 and Pioneer 10 are also the most widely-separated man made objects in the Universe because they are travelling in roughly opposite directions from the Sun.
