The Federal Highway Administration, Washington State Department of Transportation and the City of Seattle have identified a bored tunnel as the preferred alternative for replacing the downtown Seattle section of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, part of State Route 99. The proposed bored tunnel would minimize construction disruption, maintain a vital route for people and goods through downtown and improve the waterfront environment. This drive-through simulation shows a design concept for the proposed SR 99 bored tunnel and the connections at the tunnel's portals. More information regarding the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program is available at www.alaskanwayviaduct.org.

Project Engineer Mark Sawyer talks about work on SR 18 near Peasley Canyon to permanently repair damage from a large landslide that closed the westbound lanes of the highway in January. WSDOT will build a new, 10-foot-high, 600-foot-long containment wall along the westbound lanes of the highway to block future slide debris from reaching the roadway. The wall will extend east from the end of the existing containment wall near the truck-climbing lane. For more information: www.wsdot.wa.gov
WSDOT is building a new direct ramp from eastbound SR 522 to eastbound US 2 in Monroe. Currently, drivers must stop at a traffic signal before turning onto US 2, causing traffic backups during the afternoon commute and on busy weekends. The new ramp will provide direct access from eastbound SR 522 to eastbound US 2 in Monroe, eliminating delays at the signal. Other improvements including widening SR 522 from the 179th Avenue SE overpass to the US 2 interchange. www.wsdot.wa.gov

Retroreflectivity is the brightness of roadway features. It's how well drivers can see the reflectivity, of items such as roadway stripes, signs, or raised buttons. WSDOT is working on an inter-agency pilot project with the Oregon Department of Transportation to use the agency's specialized retroreflectivity van. The van, equipped with a laser, will travel throughout the state to measure WSDOT's roadway stripes. While testing with laser technology had been available since the 1990s, it's becoming more and more reliable and cost-effective.

The Washington State Department of Transportation, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, King County, the City of Seattle and the Port of Seattle, is leading a program to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct section of State Route 99, which runs along Seattles downtown waterfront. For the viaduct section between S. King Street and the Battery Street Tunnel, there is an ongoing environmental process that is reviewing three alternatives previous cut-and-cover tunnel and elevated structure alternatives and a bored tunnel alternative recommended in January 2009. This simulation shows the bored tunnels proposed route beneath downtown Seattle and its proximity to other underground structures. A second Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement for this project will be published in fall 2010. More information regarding the Alaskan Way Viaduct replacement is available at www.alaskanwayviaduct.org The proposed SR 99 bored tunnel is being designed to withstand an earthquake that only happens every 2500 years on average (in the range of a 9.0 on the Richter scale) without collapsing. We have information on our website http describing how tunnel construction would affect properties along the bored tunnel's proposed route.
