Consumer prices rose less than expected in May and posted the steepest annual drop in 59 years, according to government data today, fresh evidence that the recession is keeping inflation in check. Low prices will make it easier for the Fed to keep a key short-term interest rate near zero, where it has been since December. FedEx, the nation's second largest package shipper, lost more money in the last quarter, as consumers and businesses downsized shipments and the company took over $1 billion in one-time charges. In April, rival UPS said its first-quarter profit plunged 55 percent while it offered a disappointing second-quarter outlook too. Ten large US banks will finish repaying about $68 billion in bailout money today, marking a new phase for the most visible government effort to relieve the credit crisis. With today's repayments, Treasury will have recovered more than $70 billion distributed under the program. And the streak continues campers - Retail gas prices climbed for the 50th straight day today while crude prices that had slumped all week bounced back.. US mortgage applications fell for a fourth consecutive week, with overall demand plunging to its lowest level in nearly seven months. A rise in mortgage rates in recent weeks has sapped demand, particularly for home loan refinancing.
