One of the most joyful aspect of amateur astronomy is to observe the starry heavens with your own telescope, weather you observe the farthest galaxies, nearby star clusters or are happy observing the planets or the moon. The views of the heavens are stunning and are heavenly in a very literal sense. This is why amateur astronomers invest in expensive telescopes. Mr. Vikrant Narang, Scientific Officer, SPACE, talks about how to tweak your Newtonian Reflector telescope to significantly improve its performance. The webcast is the part of Summer Astronomy Lectures organised by the Nehru Planetarium, New Delhi.

Large parts of India have been hit by a severe heat wave, which has sent temperatures soaring to more than 45 degrees celsius. The dry and extreme weather has killed hundreds and left many areas parched. And as Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports, the searing heat and severe water shortage is affecting New Delhi residents, rich and poor alike.
investigators in southern India sifted Sunday through the rubble of a crashed plane looking for the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder after India's worst air crash in more than a decade killed 158 people. The Air India Express flight crashed Saturday morning when it overshot the Mangalore airport runway on landing, and skidded into a ravine before bursting into flames. Eight people survived the crash. Earlier reports said one of the eight survivors had died in the hospital. However, the Associated Press and Indian media are reporting that none of the survivors has died. The Press Trust of India says DNA experts have arrived to conduct DNA tests to help in the identification of the charred bodies. Officials say poor visibility and rainy weather may have played a role in the crash of the Boeing 737. The plane was carrying 166 people, including a crew of six, on a flight from Dubai. All of the passengers were Indian nationals. Survivors described a struggle to escape after the plane's fuselage split in two and caught fire. Air India Express is the budget arm of the ailing state-run Air India. The Indian government has injected hundreds of millions of dollars into the carrier to keep it in business. Boeing says it is sending a team of experts to aid the government's crash investigation. The crash is one of the deadliest in India's history. A 1996 midair collision of two planes over New Delhi killed 349 people.
A passenger plane has overshot a runway, crashed into a forest and burst into flames in southwest India, killing 159 people. The Air India jet carrying 160 passengers, including 19 children, and six crew members slid off the runway during heavy rain at Mangalore Airport at around 6.30am local time. Officials said seven people appear to have survived. Flames were seen blazing from the wreckage as firefighters fought to bring the inferno under control. Two rescue workers were seen running up a hill carrying a young girl covered in foam. She was later treated for severe burns in hospital. Other rescuers pulled out scores of burned bodies from the blackened tangle of aircraft cables, twisted metal and charred trees at the crash site. Many of the dead were still strapped into their seats, their bodies charred beyond recognition. Relatives of the victims, who had come to the airport to meet them, were seen weeping near the wreckage. "The plane shook with vibrations and split into two," a survivor called Pradeep told CNN-IBN television. He said the plane's initial touchdown appeared smooth at first, but then a small fire developed and an explosion set off a bigger blaze. The technician added that he managed to jump from the plane and was helped by villagers who had rushed to the scene to help search for survivors. Witnesses said the plane touched down on the runway correctly but did not stop on the wet tarmac and slid over the edge of a cliff at the end of the landing strip ...

From: www.youtube.com March 26, 2010 03/25/10 Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from New Delhi. Indian authorities plan to make New Delhi completely slum-free as the city prepares to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. It is the slum clearances that some people fear are at odds with one of the mission statements of the Commonwealth Games: "To develop sport for the benefit of the people". Residents in New Delhi's resettlement zones say they have been forced into even worse conditions, with few basic services and no jobs.FAIR USE NOTICE: This video may contain copyrighted material. The 1996 Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision occurred on 12 November 1996 when Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 763 (SVA 763), a Boeing 747-168B en route from New Delhi, India, to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, collided in mid-air with Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907 (KZK 1907), an Ilyushin Il-76 en route from Shymkent, Kazakhstan to New Delhi, over the village of Charkhi Dadri, Haryana, India. All 349 people on board both flights were killed, making it the second deadliest mid-air collision in history.

Sara, a passenger on flight Jet Lite S2- 256, makes an announcement for a Jet Lite ground staff at Lucknow airport on Saturday, 2 January 2010. This flight from Cochin to New Delhi was diverted to Lucknow airport because of low visibility conditions due to fog in Delhi. The flight landed at 10.30pm. The inefficiency and discrimination of Jet Lite staff, or the company as a whole, was evident when around 200 passengers were told to spend the night at the airport whereas few selected passengers were provided hotel accommodation. Jet Lite passengers had to demand for food and water, which was provided at 1am. Meanwhile, a Kingfisher flight to Delhi was also diverted to Lucknow, but the company made sure their passengers were taken care and also flew to Delhi at around 11.30pm in spite of the bad weather. Safety is always the priority, but why does the passenger bear the brunt of zero efficiency and no back-up plan?

NEW DELHI -- More than 30 people have died in cold weather-related incidents in northern India in the past 24 hours, including 10 people killed in train accidents caused by dense fog, police said Sunday. A cold snap left at least two dozen homeless people dead in Uttar Pradesh state since Saturday, taking the death toll from exposure in the region to 40 over the last week, police spokesman Surendra Srivastava said. Last winter the state reported 151 cold-related deaths. Authorities began distributing blankets and firewood to the homeless last week. The cold caused dense fog that also led to two separate train collisions that killed 10 people and injured 47 others Saturday in Uttar Pradesh, police said. In other areas of northern India, including New Delhi, poor visibility grounded or delayed dozens of flights Saturday, said Shashanka Nanda, a spokesman for the Delhi International Airport Limited. Conditions had improved by Sunday, he said. Local television channels showed footage of hundreds of frazzled passengers and large piles of luggage crowding the airport terminals in the Indian capital. Continued low visibility also disrupted rail schedules across large swathes of northern India stranding thousands of people, railway official NK Srivastava said in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
